i dont think this is a contest at 140. but at 147 i think cotto beats him. i dont think chavez is necessarily underrated on here although i will agree cats wil jump on a certain fighter and never let go.
Cotto doesn't have the punch resistance.. His chin will fail him. Saying pre Margarito or anything to that extent isn't fair, Miguel Cotto never made it to that level for good reasons. He couldn't outbox Chavez or use his size on the inside. Cotto's skill is up there, but not there. I'm not saying Chavez stops him, but he will break Cotto down in 12 rounds.
Chavez getting underrated is nothing new here. Another thing to consider, if Cotto backpeddles against Chavez, he's doomed. Chavez would be cutting off the ring, and would be all over him.
Chavez was a master body puncher. Cotto always had stamina issues. Remember Taylor's face? Cotto has a glass face.
Cotto gets alot of credit for his win over Mosley at WW and rightfully so. That version of Mosley didn't gas out like he previously does. Chavez probably was not the devastating puncher or had the same speed as 135 or 140, but he still used alot of pressure. JCC wasn't at his best at 147 and really had more to do with his age and deterioration than his skills or talent. I think Cotto might even drop JCC like Randall did with a right hand at 147, but Cotto's stamina fails him and gets pummeled and stopped by JCC. Chavez wasn't great at 147, but then Cotto is not on DLH's or Whitaker's level.
I agree with a lot of what you said but have to disagree on Cotto dropping Chavez. Yes Randall did drop him but that was a picture perfect shot, just one of those once in a blue moon kind of punch. In Chavez other fights he never came close to going down, and although Cotto is a good puncher he doesnt hit as hard as a Prime ODLH. Delahoya hit an old Chavez with everything but the kitchen sink and couldnt put him down. THe Mosely win was a great one for Cotto, but lets not forget Mosely was already on the decline. This was far from the same Mosely that beat Oscar the first time.
Yea I think your right. I was wondering why it didn't happen again in the rematch. Probably giving too much credit to Randall.
chavez aint dropping cotto at 147 either though. chavez was not his best at 147. at his best he wouldnt get dropped. but at 147 cotto was better than him. to each his own though
Chavez didnt win a meaningful fight above 140, he wasnt any good above that weight so Cotto easily. :hat
