Cotto vs Cuevas (pre Hearns) at 147

Cotto has more overall ability and would four times out of five win, and I suspect win fairly easily.

Cotto has fair power that Cuevas would have to respect, but on top of this, Cotto would have a considerable advantage in boxing ability. Cuevas might get lucky with a power punch, but I supsect Cotto would after a cautious start, eventually get totally on top by the middle rounds and stop Cuevas in the Championship rounds.

I'll take the opposite side. Cuevas was one of the biggest punchers the division ever saw. Cotto is good for sure, but hes shown that he can be hurt, and Cuevas would hurt anybody. Cotto has a lot more skills, but he can still be hit. And if he catches a couple of Cuevas's punches, he would be hurt just like anyone else. His chin isn't iron by any means. Cuevas also had an iron chin, and wasn't as slow with his shots as some think.

Cotto could play it safe, but he's not going to run from Cuevas. And early on, Cuevas would find him to the body and the head. Cuevas is one of the 3 hardest punchers ever at 147 and I see him being able to get Cotto in trouble early and knock him out. Cotto is an excellent fighter, but looking at styles, I think this is a bad matchup for him.

 

I'd favour Cuevas, his punching power at this weight was freakish and he'd have Cotto stylistically checked. Early-mid round stoppage in this one.

Cotto has bad defence, fairly poor mobility and nowhere as much power.HE's no pure boxer.

Cuevas would starch him badly and quickly.

 

I agree, and let´s not forget how sick and high Cuevas power was at 147 lbs...

 

Pre-Hearns, for about 12 months Cuevas was the best welter in the world.

Leonard said he was going to fight Cuevas, but then decided to fight lighter punching Benetiz for the title instead.

SRL let the perfect foil Hitman take care of Cuevas...the he and Tommy had the "Superfight".

The best of Cuevas would K.O or TKO the pre-Mosley Cotto. After Sat nite we will know more about Cotto.

 

This is a mismatch, Cuevas by early and devastating knockout, and I do mean a ten count KO not TKO. Cotto does not have the chin and durability to take what Cuevas will throw his way, and he does not have the defence to stay out of harm`s way either.

Throw in Cotto`s come forward style and it looks like an early nights work for Pipino. Miguel will be right in front of Cuevas which will play righ into his hands as he will be right there for him to tee of on, and once Pipino had you hurt he got you out of there fairly quickly, and I see Cotto getting hurt very fast in this one.

I think if the 'Boxes' he stands a better than even chance of winning a decision or late stoppage - if he stands there and trades with Cuevas, good night sweet prince...

 

Cotto, as much as I like him, would have to be on his very best game, and make no mistakes against a killer like Cuevas. Cuevas was a very limited fighter who was eventually exposed by Hearns and then by Duran, but what he did within his limitations, he did very, very well.

 

Cuevas was fun, but he was a journeyman turned good, then had a lot of confidence, but Cotto's edge in class would be a huge advantage.

Cuevas crushes him. Pipino had tremendous stamina to go with his two handed power and granite chin. He showed good intelligence in retiring southpaw Backus, leaving his hook at home to tee right off with right hand leads (which fractured the former champion's eye socket).

Hearns had the height and reach to keep out of range. Cotto doesn't share these physical advantages. Espada, Gray, Campanino, Weston (broken jaw) and Ranzany were all competent stylists, and Cuevas dispatched all of them. Espada tried three times, and Pipino was simply too much. The combined won-loss records of his vanquished foes is off the charts. Cotto would just add to the total.
