Gomez doesn't have financial problems(though he's not rich), I'm not sure why that one build-up video indicated that. I heard the purses were something like Cotto 2 million and Gomez 400k.
In that one webisode he said he didn't have 700 dollars to pay for his trip to the doctor. Why would he lie about that?
the contender contestants if i remember correctly received $4000 a week for every week they were there, runners up (2nd and 3rd) received $300.000 each, not rich but he has made a bit, also lets not forget he got another 300-400k for the gatti fight, he also has sponsors.
I don't think he was lying necessarily, but I think the video took that statement out of context somehow to make it more dramatic. As Relentless said, Gomez has made some money and he has sponsors.
If he is fighting full-time, he has to be struggling. Sponsers help, but you need to get paid. He got paid 4,000 here and there for the contender and got possilby a decent paycheck for Gatti. No one on HBO is going to get paid 400.00 for a fight. It's a struggle and worse if he has a family counting on him. A check for 400,000 will help, but he has to share that with his team and hospital bills are through the roof for any little thing wrong with you. I don't know about you guys, but Gomez looks kind of big over Cotto and remember he came down two weight classes to WW. I think this is not going to be a walk in the park for Cotto. Well, a win for Gomez will help his future in boxing and will help him with a bigger payday. I'm going with Cotto, but like I said, Gomez is big and possilby hungrier than Cotto.
My bad, I thought you wrote 400.00. Either way, you know life is expensive and the purses have to be split with his team members, which possibly have full-time jobs. Either way, if he wins or loses, if he puts on a great fight....other promoters will want to use him for other fights. Good luck to him either way.
Gomez said he spent nearly all his money from the Contender and was broke again after it. Boxers routinely get ripped off, and aren't exactly known for being financial wizards with their paychecks anyway. It's nice to see a fighter who isn't a big name get a good payday, since most fighters get paid **** all and treated like ****.
