Because Arum knew it would be an easy win? Why does Floyd get a bunch of flack for fighting Hatton and De La Hoya but nobody puts Cotto/Arum's feet to the fire for fighting an over-hyped sitcom star? Why couldn't Cotto have fought Williams or Clottey?

I think this was to make Cotto look good and build him up for a fight with Floyd.

More like to secure Cotto's image and hype up a fight with Margarito.

Arum had this planned for 2 years now, and hes finally going to get it.

3 out of Cotto's last 4 fights were against top 10 welterweights. He doesn't deserve an easy fight now and then?

When you consider these fights involve very real money, no champion ever deserves easy fights. Maybe in sparring, but not when people are paying to see you.

I can see both points in this one.

Cotto vs Margarito is a potential fight of the year, and probably Arum wanted to showcase the pair of them in a double header.

The Margarito Cintron fight would have been made in ten seconds, whilst finding an opponent for Cotto would have been much more difficult, bearing in mind his recent wins over Judah and Mosley, and the fact that most of the other top names have recently been in action (Quintana/Williams etc) whilst Mayweather won't fight on a Top Rank bill and DLH would hardly be willing to be forced to share centre stage with anybody.

This would leave us with a guy like Gomez - brave and half decent, and looking for a pay day before being found out at gatekeeper level. I suppose this fight suited all in that respect.

The problem is, we have seen two contender stars getting title shots within the last 12 months - Manfredo and Gomez. Manfredo was beaten like a little *****, whilst Gomez was hopelessly outclassed. There must be some measures put in place to avoid these mismatches occuring in future, because this isn't good for the sport.

Thing is, the fans know what they are getting ahead of time. Nobody is forcing them to pay for it. I'd be inclined to agree with you if every fighter was consistently fighting tough fights, but the don't. Cotto more than most routinely takes on tough challenges. This was a break to keep him sharp and in public view.
