i'd be dissapointed if this was official, as i would have preffered cotto-williams/margarito/cintron before a showdown with floyd later this year. anyway cotto by murder. we'll at least get to see a brutally calculated beatdown.

I think this could be a real good fight the styles gel IMO. If I was cotto I wouldent be to pleased with Gomez I would have been looking for a bigger name. I think Gomez has a lot of heart and will not be the push over many think.

i think its interesting and im kinda excited. ony because i like to watch Cotto brutalize people and Gomez has a mainstream following from the show, it will draw even more fans to Cotto. that is the whole point. the more people that tune in to see Gomez will see Cotto and become fans.

That would be great. Unfortunately, HBO's schedule is booked in both February and March. April would be the earliest he could get an HBO date.

from a competitive standpoint the fight is a mismatch. It remains to be seen if the promotion leading up to the fight even bothers to dispute that obvious fact.

All of this aside, it is a matchup that is almost guaranteed to be a very fan friendly affair. What does it prove in the "big picture"? Not much. However, coming off of fights against Judah and Mosley, I don't think that this is being passed off as anything but an attempt to keep Cotto active. I don't see arum, or SRL for that matter, selling this as a competitive, sport defining affair. In that sense, they are not at all misleading the public.

Simply said, the purpose of this fight is to keep Cotto active. No more, no less. As long as they don't PPV it, I have no issue with them keeping Cotto active in a fan friendly affair.

How is Gomez gonna get beat down if much bigger guys like Manfredo or Brinkley couldn't do it. People forget that those guys are legit SMW's.

The question I ask myself is could Cotto beat Manfredo right now? Well maybe, but then I gotta ask could Cotto be competitive with Lacy? Hell no is the answer I come too.

So yes Cotto should win and be the favorite, but Gomez will make it very competitive, more so than Urkal or Malignaggi did.

This is a bad post for a number of reasons. First off, Manfredo has moved up a weight division since the contender, whilst Gomez has moved down. Secondly, Manfredo has made significant improvements since the contender under Freddie Roach. Thirdly, you are comparing size, not the actual ability of Manfredo when compared to Cotto. Cotto is a vastly superior fighter to the version of Manfredo that Gomez fought on the contender. Gomez has not proven himself to be anywhere near the level of fighter that Malignaggi or Urkal have. Cotto will be not only the more powerful fighter, but the much faster and better fighter also, which leads to landing much more punches. Of course Cotto wouldn't fight Lacy, the size difference is massive, and its a silly comparison. Manfredo and Brinkly had to weigh in at 160 for the contender and Gomez was keeping more weight on.

What has Urkal or Malignaggi done better than Gomez? Urkal is known for getting stopped by Vivian Harris at 140. Malignaggi is known for getting pounded by Cotto, beating the "super-elite" Lovemore Ndou and barely squeaking by Ngoudo. Whereas Gomez beat bigger dudes in Manfredo (who went on to fight Calzaghe and be competitive with Lacy at SMW), Kaddour, and Brinkley and dominated Gatti and Tackie. Gomez's resume is just as impressive as those guys.

The whole size comparison was sarcasm, the point is, Gomez has fought and beat bigger guys than Cotto, not necessarily better, but people making this to be some mismatch are completely off-target.

    Gomez is a dead meat.

Of course he will put up a galant fight . . . but Cotto will systematically break him down until he kneels in the canvas.

Gomez beat an absolutely ancient version of both Gatti and Takie. Its not even worth mentioning. Urkal is a world class fighter who went the distance with a prime Kostay Tszyu and went neck and neck with Vivian Harris twice. Malignaggi is an undefeated world champion who beat top contenders in Ngoudou and Cherry and absolutely shutout an experienced title holder in Lovemore Ndou. Both Malignaggi and Urkal are better fighters then Gomez, and both have fought better opposition. Its not comparable. Anyone who has seen them fight would know this.
