Not only Arum is throwing those numbers...HBO are too

HBO Boxing After Dark Recap Part 1
    "The Battle"

    July 26, 2008

    MGM Grand-Las Vegas, Nevada

HBO recap of Cotto vs. Margarito part 1Early returns show the event will be a success with the final PPV buys for the event projected to come in between 425,000 and 475,000. That would make it the number 2 boxing PPV of the year, only behind Roy Jones, Jr. vs. Felix Trinidad. The official attendance for the event was 10,477.

Well now that HBO has confirmed the numbers I think we can now say the fight was a big success. I think these are good numbers considering neither fighter is as popular as Ricky Hatton or De La Hoya.

It shows that a FIGHT can still sell...and not a name.

Bravo..imagine what this could've done with a more stacked undercard.

I thought it should've done more than that.

The thing is, when there is a REALLY badass fight, it can only garner so much attention unless one of the fighters brings mainstream fame to the fight.

400-500k buys is probably the max that a fight can pull PPV wise without crossover appeal

yeah. i think it could've been promoted a little bit better. but i still felt it would sell 600k or more because of the rivalry, the fact that it was the hottest division, and because it was guaranteed to be an action fight(which ufc fans like)
