Well, Trinidad wasn´t a natural welter when he faced Hopkins anymore. He was fighting for years at jmw and proved his worth at mw by knocking out the number 2 mw in Joppy. Additionally he was the heavy favourite against Hopkins, i don´t know the odds for the Margo-Cotto fight but i doubt Cotto was as big of an favourite. So, while Cotto was seen as the number one ww facing the number three. Trinidad was the number two facing the number one and was the favourite in the fight. There is not much between them. Well, Hopkins is far greater than Margo but he wasn´t seen like that at the time of the Hopkins-Trinidad fight. I agree with the rest of your post.
Instant!!! Mexico Vs. Puerto Rico classic Add right along side, Chavez, Sanchez, Gomez, Zarate, Benitez, Palomino ect... Cotto & Margarito are now Icon's.
Mayweather vs Hatton a better fight? Not a chance, unless you absolutely cannot stand Hatton. Cotto vs Margarito was a match with two prime fighters from different nationalites, and different styles. If must have been Ali vs Frazier in Mexico or Puerto. The story of the fight to me was Margarito's undomindable will, and durability. Cotto was the stronger puncher, the better boxer, and the faster boxer by a good margin, but he just could not deter Margarito, and was mentally / physcially broken down by a harder man. Speaking of Mayweather, I honestly think he wants no part of Margarito. I believe that then, and after Margarito’s recent performance, I believe it even more now. If Mayweather wants to win over his toughest critics, he takes a match with Margarito and guts out a win.
Two dangerous, elite fighters in their primes get in the ring with each other with a whole lot of chips on the table and give it everything they've got in the ring. Mix in some national pride, a compelling contrast in styles and a gutsy, entertaining come-from-behind upset knockout, and I agree, you've got yourself a modern classic. All credit to both of these guys for being willing to take such a fight, and, although Margarito deserves recognition for being an absolute warrior who will fight anyone, special credit to Cotto for being willing to take on a guy in Margarito who it seems a lot of the other marquee fighters rather sidestep. Great performance and great story on the side of Margarito, finally getting the big fight and the big win in such iconic fashion after all these years.
I'd like to see a re-match. I think Cotto could win it, but he would need to learn how to clinch and tie his man up a bit.
