Given that Cotto makes a quick recovery, and re enters the top 5 p4p, and Margarito doesnt mess up either, then i think it can happen.

coz margarito has finally made it to the top 10 p4p list, he will utilise this time to make some money with big names, oscar to the unifications of the welterweight titles.
And also, bob arum holds these 2, he can make it happen, all he has to do, is make Cotto a superstar once more, and make sure margarito remains strong.

I can`t see Cotto or his people wanting Margs again. Not this soon, he took a systematic pounding. That can take a l o n g time to recover from. Some don`t make it all the way back. He`ll need some softies first.

Cotto will never step in the ring with Margarito again.

Rematches are usually best when first fight ends by decision.
Fights by ko or tko are usually followed by another one.
But this was Cotto quitting on a knee so might not be as bad as being pummeled into ko or tko.
I guess its best just to wait and see how fight 2 turns out.

I want a rematch, and I still believe Cotto can beat Margarito. The first 7rds of the fight prove this in my eyes and opinion. I'm certainly not going to criticise Miguel's tactics as they were damn near perfect except for one area. Remember Hatton's interview post the beatdown he took off pbf? Hatton's words were "he was doing alot of fiddling and farting about on the inside". This is what Miguel had to do.

Despite Marg being the bigger man, Miguel had complete control of the range by establishing the dominant jab in the fight, excellent lateral movement and landing combinations whilst moving out at an angle which took Marg off balance. For whatever the reason ,stamina, broken nose etc, late in the fight Miguel lost the ability to control the distance, this effectively handed the fight to Marg. Once Marg comprimised the area which Miguel decided was safe, Miguel had to react, early in the fight he done this, late in the fight he was unable to (didn't choose to, he was unable to), this is where a change of tactic was needed.

Miguel still had enough about him to avoid the initial shots in Marg's attacks, but the accumulation is what done the damage. When Marg was closing, Miguels best chance was to slip (stand tall) and tie Marg's arms up, let the ref break and continue to do this working behind his jab. From personal experience, I have found that this is the best thing to do against a big, strong swarmer as it produces a lot of 'downtime' during the round which aids recovery significantly.

Miguel had a big enough lead early on to employ this tactic from the 6th round. Granted, its not what we pay to see, but styles make fights and the best way to stop a swarmer is to stop them punching.

Anyway, as I've stated in previous posts rest, recover, and come back stronger in 09.

I doubt Cotto would ever beat Margarito.

Cotto was being picked apart by Margo from like Rd2 till the end of the fight. I don't think a rematch would be wise by Cotto.

Why would any Cotto fan want him to go through this again.

There's not way Cotto will be any faster or stronger next time and he used the best plan possible to beat Margarito and still couldn't pull it off.

And forget about standing there and trading body shots, that would just get him KD earlier.

Cotto still has the skills to beat any welter not named Margarito.

Good post, but I just don't understand the part of Cotto leaning against the ropes like he could take it. He could in the beginning, but it eventually caught up to him. His corner was telling him to stay off the ropes. He just needed a round and a half and the fight would have been over. A little holding here and there would have made the difference to finish the fight. I thought I heard that Margarito was winning by two points and one was even. It Cotto could have continued to pop shots and hold a little. Cotto is talking about trying to come back before the year is out. He should fight a top fifteen fighter and we will all see if he still has the goods or he is now a Lacy. That was a bad beating even though he was still in the fight.
