I've been thinking about the whole Margarito thing. We all know that Margarito got caught trying to use loaded gloves against Mosley. Now, everyone speculates that Margarito used loaded gloves against Cotto. You only had to look at Cotto's face after that fight as proof. I believed that wholeheartedly. Until Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao beat up Miguel Cotto worse than Antonio Margarito did. Not only that, he scored 2 knockdowns against Cotto, something Margarito could not do. So if a person still believes that Margarito used loaded gloves against Cotto, than you would have to believe that Manny Pacquiao hits harder than a junior middleweight with loaded gloves. As you can see, the theory that Margarito used loaded gloves against Cotto falls apart right there.

So why did Cotto get beat up so bad against Margarito when he was putting on a boxing clinic for the first 6 rounds? I say it is because Cotto put on a boxing clinic for 6 rounds. Confused? Let me explain.

During the fight, Cotto showed a lot of footwork and boxing skills. He tried to avoid getting hit while still tagging Margarito. Cotto tried to be a slick boxer, but ultimately failed because it takes a certain level of stamina to pull that off. That is why Mayweather is one of a kind. He is a slick boxer with that kind of stamina. Cotto is not. Cotto wore himself out trying to avoid punishment so much, that he got caught in the end with no gas left in the tank and the Tornado decimated him.

Compare the fight to Mosley. Mosley hit Margarito, then he would step in and hold Margarito. Hit, hold. Hit, hit, hold. Massive combo, hold. You could see the difference. Mosley held Margarito and effectively squashed any momentum Margarito tried to build up while Cotto kept moving around and wasting his energy. It takes a lot less energy to hold for a second and get reset than to move constantly.

Another reason Margarito won is the same reason Pacquiao won against Cotto: Psychological warfare. Both Margarito and Pacquiao took Cotto's best punches and showed no reaction. This messed with Cotto's head. Cotto was able to go toe to toe with Mosley, who hits harder than Margarito or Pacquiao, yet got decimated by the Tornado and Pac Man. Why? Because Mosley respected Cotto's power, yet Margarito and Pacquiao showed no respect for Cotto's power. They both sucked it in and held firm, giving the impression they were unaffected, which demoralized Cotto.

What could Cotto have done differently against Margarito? He could have stayed in the pocket. He could have stayed in the eye of the storm and weathered it. Had he decided to spend 2-3 rounds in the beginning of the fight to go toe to toe, taking a risk to cause major damage, then go on to use the hit and hold method, Margarito would have crumbled. Remember, it took Mosley 8 rounds to knock Margarito down with clean shots, so if Cotto had not wasted his energy trying to avoid punishment so much, he could have done the same thing. If Cotto's chin could withstand the power of Mosley, he could have taken shots from Margarito for a couple of rounds to deliver hell back to him.

So in conclusion, I feel Margarito did not use loaded gloves against Cotto. Cotto lost because he spent all his energy trying to avoid punishment and got demoralized when he felt his punches were not affecting Margarito. No energy left in tank + mental image of punches being ineffective = DEFEAT, both mentally and physically.
