He hurt Martinez so early. It appears that Martinez was being out techniqued. He thrived against bigger, less agile, less talented opponents. Cotto was the best boxer he ever faced and it’s possible he was going to have trouble with him no matter what. The fact he was hurt so early makes it difficult to tell if his legs were finished from the start or he was wobbly legged the rest of the fight partly because of the beating he took the first round (which could have compounded his knee issue). It’s happened before. Berto was wobbly legged the whole fight after Ortiz knocked him down, Joshua was too vs Ruiz, and Wilder vs Fury. If those guys had knee issues before the fight, people would be saying it was the knees from start, not just after they took a good shot. Martinez was obviously past it (so was Cotto), and had bad knees, but many injured fighters can go a few rounds before the injured area starts to be a problem. Case in point, Benavidez did alright vs Crawford until the rounds started to pile up and he became a statue. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be the same for everyone though, or that his performance wasn’t being affected despite him doing alright. It’s hard to say with confidence the hook happened because of the knees and the knees couldn’t have hold up for at least a couple of rounds.
Martinez was finished before the first round, I’d be surprised if he had competitive sparring in the lead up he looked that bad, leg wise
There's no way he had competive sparring. Maybe he brought someone in for a day at a time to keep it hidden, but with his mobility issues, unless it popped on the way to the ring, he must have pulled the wool in sparring. Or contracted his partners to spar on the back foot, as he could assume Cotto would try to box, rather than walk him down.
Highlight of the night was Andy Lee damn near decapitating some guy, don't remember the rest. Obviously none this year but usually 3 or 4 fights across the country a year. NYC most of the time just cuz it has a ton of fights and the closest spot (live in Ohio not a lot of options without a long drive)
Yep just checked boxrec. Jackson had him up against the ropes and looked to have him hurt before that hook
Awww man.. I remember vividly betting for Cotto by TKO because I knew Sergio could barely even walk. I felt for the people that paid PPV or in your case bought tickets to the fight. Cotto knew Sergio’s knees were gone and that’s why he took that fight when he did. Sergio had been calling him out for years.
