First off this is my first thread, iv been a regular on ESB for a while now but i rarely ever post, i prefer to sit back and read some of your comments which is always fun! Now i know hundreds of threads have already been made regarding this topic, but i thought id give my input anyway.

Anyways, the more the hype surrounding a potential bout between welterweight kings PBF and Cotto grows, im finding myself watching more of Cotto, just to gain an idea weather this bloke really has a chance of dethroning the extremely talented Mayweather.

I admit i am a Mayweather fan but not a "nuthugger" i simply admire his skills and talent. HOWEVER! I am beginning to become a little frustrated with his choice of opponents of late. Cotto is simply the only bloke Mayweather should fight as all us fans have already decided. They say styles make fights and that opposites attract. These two blokes are as opposite as a UP and DOWN. Floyd the cocky arrogant yet supremely gifted and arguably most talented fighter over the past decade Mayweather in one corner and Miguel the quiet spoken humble yet absolute ruthless Cotto in the other. I love watching both, Mayweather is like an artist in the ring, Cotto is just brutal! no tip tap **** just brute force.

Cotto has and is improving out of sight with each fight he takes. His last fight vs Gomez is by no means a benchmark when looking at the sheer quality of this bloke. Yet you could still see that with every fight he brings something new to the table. Against Mosley he showed his counter punching ability and against Gomez he established a brutal jab. Question is what can Cotto bring against Floyd? Well the way i see it, for starters he has a blue print which ODH provided. Firstly, Swarm floyd stick the jab in front of his face and not for 6 rounds but for the entire fight! Secondly we know PBF likes to fight off the ropes, this could provide his downfall as Cotto is one of the best body attackers in the business. Thridly, apply effective pressure dont give this bloke room because if you do u can bet your money Floyd will hit you with straight right hands and hooks at will! Cotto has to be quick get in and get out with lateral head movement and mix up the combinations head head body body etc. Just to keep Floyd guessing.

With all that said its alot easier said than put into practice. Floyd is a master his knowledge inside the ring is simply second to none. There is noone as composed and as cool in the ring as PBF, boxing is his forte he knows nothing better, the bloke is phenomenal. Its one thing to say "im going to do this and that" but to be able to put it to practice against him is a whole other level. He has a way of changing the fight with a blink of an eye. His opponent may think hes figured him out, and before u know the bloke has hit u with a combination u never saw coming, its his adaptability and ring generalship that seperates him from the rest. His ability to put his opponents off their game plan. Simply put if Cotto adopts a game plan and really sticks to it he has a great chance if he doesnt it could be a long long night for him.

Finally my prediction, well it depends on my last sentence, if Cotto sticks to a game plan he could sneak out a SD, if he doesnt i see Floyd winning via 11KO. I tipped Floyd to knockout Hatton in the tenth and i was right. But that was more to do with a feeling i got more than anything.

    Take it easy

    Good thread :good

I agree that Cotto does seem to be coming on strong, but for me it'd still be a Mayweather victory. His counter punching is amazing and Cotto has too many flaws in his defence.

One major flaw being dropping his left after a left hook to the body. The punch goes out and then stays out. If he can clean this up and work on a few other glitches in his armour then he will have a chance - otherwise Cotto is getting knocked out!

Mayweather is simply the only guy Cotto should fight. Cotto does not want the fight enough.

If that's the case, Mayweather doesn't want the fight either.. Arum is the one who's trying to make the fight happen and he has already started to insult Floyd too..

    BTW, good post Round 1!

Too bad they don't get along or like to work together.. But this fight should already be taking place anyways after Cotto/Margo & Mayweather/DLH II in 2009..

Everytime the subject comes up I imagine Cotto, Arum and Floyd sitting somewhere having a drink and reading the posts. Trying to decide when are they going to collect all the millions they have waiting for them

Cotto has the power to make PBF weary of staying inthe pocket with him for too long, and although people like to think of Cotto as a pressure fighter, he really is a boxer puncher with deceiving speed who has been brought along at the right pace, and who I now believe is ready to take on PBF. PBF obviously holds the advantage in speed and defense, and I believe this would allow him to capitalize on the holes in Cotto's defensive game. I like both guys, and although I think PBF would win by a SD, there's no way that I would be disappointed regardless of the outcome of the fiight. Win-win for all of us boxing fans if this fight ever occurs.

    Good post.

I've thought Cotto would beat Mayweather for a little while now. And if this fight happens in mid 2009, I'd be even more convinced we'd see Cotto bust him up bad.

Cotto needs a solid win over Margarito and 500k+ PPV sales in that fight to get PBF to the table.

He's got the right tool-set to beat PBF IMO. Would definately love to see this fight come off early '09.

this is what is wrong with some posters.
who gives two shits about the ppv numbers. all cotto has to do is win the damn fight with margarito. then pbf has no excuse not to fight him. the best fight the best in order to be recognized as the best.

I get hyper thinking about how relentless Miguel Cotto would be if he ever gets his shot against Floyd Mayweather. Just looking at his stone cold face as he ruthlessly tears through his opponents. I'm not sure if he can do it against Mayweather, But if this fight does come off Miguel Cotto would be nothing but savage.

Thanks for the positive responses boys! :good good to see theres no abuse going on hehe..

Brooklyn im not so sure Cotto has the ability to "bust him up real bad". If its anything that Cotto needs to bring in terms of something new its an improved defence. Defensively, its hard to find anyone better than Mayweather. People spoke about how Hatton was going to rough Mayweather around and target his body..and what did we see the absolute reverse of that with Mayweather playing Hatton's game. The bloke is a genius. Floyd will land his fare share of body shots too you can bet on that! and Cotto will be hit far more than Floyd.

The difference between the two in terms of punching style is. Floyd hits you with rapid stinging punches, whereas Cotto puts everything into it. If anything Floyd has the ability to bust up Cotto, Yet cotto has the ability to knock Floyd out.

P.S Sorry i made a mistake, my prediction was meant to read 11TKO not 11KO :yep
