Out of curiousity Sweet Pea, do you have a fighter in mind beating Roy h2h? You did mention picking out several fighters who'd give him hell but none you thought who could beat him.

Jones was better at 168 than 160, and was still facing a smaller man at a weight class he dominated when he faced Griffin. I pointed out the differences between the two Jones/Griffin fights in my last post.

Pea dominated Mayweather in a FIGHT(hardly a boxing match) aside from the KD, and that was a young Pea, pre title and reign.

with cotto and calzaghe, i think cotto's speed and timing would be big factors against the 2008 calzaghe. p4p cotto is stronger and on the inside, i see his accurate punches and harder punches giving him an advantage. overall, i just think he could land the cleaner blows in the fight, even catching joe coming in at times with right hands.

i think cottos pressure would make kessler uneasy and hed make him fight his fight, keeping him on the defensive. but kesslers uppercut could change the fight in an instant.

you make good points with mosley and rafa. mosley has trouble with good jabbers. rafa could outbox him.

with guzman and mijares, guzman attacks from more angles, has more speed, and is very awkward. i agree with your statement about him making mijares fight his fight more often than the other way around.

like i said earlier, im new to the sport so dont take my opinions seriously.

Yes, definitely.. the potshotting, very low output, ultra-defensive one.

H2H P4P matchups are extremely hard to do, because they involve too many variables. Do you make the fighters bigger or smaller, if bigger, you need to lessen their speed and reflexes by the neccessary amount. If smaller, you need to lessen their power and whatnot. Too many variables.

As is, I'd take Whitaker, as I said, to beat Jones. Other guys like a WW Robinson, LW Duran, Loi at 140, Napoles, Gavilan, and certain pressure fighters would've given Jones very intriguing matchups as well. Much more than that as well, I'm just lazy. I think Jones is fantastic and capable of beating almost anyone in a head to head sense, but he's not head and shoulders ahead of the competition.

I cant see how Cotto would beat Pac in a p4p H2H terms. Relative to their weight, Pac would still be a fast WW probably equivalent to Shane but with the power of someone like Margarito (possibly more given the fact that Pac has KO'd proven iron chinned warriors). Those who favour Cotto mention his boxing skills and jab but dont forget, MAB has an excellent jab and is definitely as good a boxer as Cotto is, if not better and he got blitzed. The ones that troubles Pac most is Height, chin and superb counter skills. As it is, I would not put Cotto's counter skills on the level of JMM and I wouldnt rate his chin as good as Morales (h2h) on their first fight(Pac-Morales 1), Morales also had the height advantage which Cotto wouldnt have over Pac relative to their weight. IMO Pac KO's Cotto somewhere in the 7th through accumulation.

Think of the people voting Margo to stop Cotto now, well just imagine Margo had much better boxing skills, alot more explosive and alot faster.

I agree with you Pea though, in that Pernell would match up very well h2h with anyone. He would certainly be a tough fight for Roy.

Actually, i agree with most of this. I don't think Pea would beat Jones though in his prime, Jones was simply too good. But he would make it a tough fight for him. I like the inital part of your post reagrding h2h match ups. I think for the most part, they are silly when talking about big weight differences, because it is far too hard to measure.

:D Your opinions are much appreciated, I have only been following boxing very closely for less than two years, so I have a ton to learn too. I could see Kessler getting very uncomfortable with Cotto's pressure too, but I just think he would be able to stay calm enough to keep the fight on the outside a lot more than on the inside. The main reason for that being that Cotto wouldn't be able to walk through Kessler's punches.

Cotto is probably stronger physically than Calzaghe on the inside, who's pretty damn strong himself, but his defense is significantly worse and that's why he would get tagged more IMO. Some of the punches that catch Cotto that he doesn't see could hurt him too. I really worry about Cotto's chin in a lot of these matchups. I could even see someone like Haye with excellent timing taking him out early.

So the only one you disagree with me on is Cotto-Guzman? I could really see it either way with that one. To be honest, I picked him over Cotto only to make the #1 P4P thing make more sense. Same goes for Guzman-Calzaghe. In reality, it's almost impossible to make a very logical decision in that one. Also, Guzman never showed his abilities when he's really had to step it up in a tough fight though, so it's hard to tell his true limits.

Damn, this thread is getting good right when I have to leave to some father's day thing..

Sweet Pea, how would SRR beat Jones in a H2H P4P matchup? I can't picture any way SRR even has a chance, outside of him catching Jones with something huge, which is highly unlikely.

I would love to see Cotto vs Calzaghe h2h and p4p. Would be sensational. Much closer fight than people here think. Cotto is too well rounded for Kessler, would go to work on the inside, and use his superior combination punching. Cotto v Guzman is pretty much a pickem fight IMO... Cotto v Mijares as well. Cotto would beat Dawson p4p and h2h. The way i see it, Cotto, Guzman, Mijares, Calzaghe and Mayweather are the top 5 fighters in the sport h2h and p4p. Fights between these guys could realistically go either way. Kessler, JMM, Pac, Montiel, Mosley and Dawson are the next lot just outside of this.

Because Pac needs room for his power to be effective, and Cotto would smother him. Cotto is far superior in close quarters, more balanced, more powerful from this range. Cotto would push Pac back, and provided he didn't get caught, would utilise his stylistic advantage IMO.
