Cotto was doing so well with the jab, why did he stop using it?

Yeah.....For the first round and part of the second, it looked like Pacquiao was going to be in for a schooling of JMM like proportions......

.......as soon as Cotto started to push in a mode to impose his physical will on Pacquiao, Cotto had'nt even got dropped yet as I said in the room I was watching the fight in, "Cotto will lose if he keeps going foward pushing the fight like that."

......only a few seconds passed and Cotto was in the seat of his pants.:D

......I should know, because being a huge JMM fan, Marquez made the same mistake in his rematch with Pac that Cotto did. He found great sucess while in boxing mode landing anything he wanted too......that he seeked to add additional mustard on his shots and plant his feet to throw thunder.......like Cotto, Marquez found himself on the seat of his pants, and from a bigger shot than the shot that floored Cotto.

......the difference in the two between JMM and Cotto, is that JMM is so mentally strong and so well conditioned cardio wise from training at extreme high altitude, that Marquez was able to avoid a snowball effect from the knockdown and ride the tide back into boxing mode.

After the fight last night, I re-viewed that 3rd round again of JMM-Pac to see the difference in how Marquez handled adversity in comparison to Cotto......

......The difference was "know how"........Marquez realized right away why he had been put on the seat of his pants, and quickly reverted in round 4 to boxing moving to his left away from Pacquiao's left.

Cotto's mentality was to fight fire with fire, and by the time he realized he should be boxing, he was in the midst of the recieving end of a beatdown.

Exactly.....Cotto fans were yelling, "he's going in for the kill."...........but it was much too early for that.

I have no idea what Cotto's corner was saying to him after he got dropped, the room I watched it in was to loud for me to hear.....but I've heard from others here that Cotto's corner did'nt offer much but somewhat panic......
.....dont know if thats true or not.....but I will say that a proffesional corner does not panic, and attempts to get their fighter back to focus on the game plan.

Nacho Beristain after Marquez was dropped in round 3 by Pacquiao......"You just cant stand there and trade with him!......You have to box with intelligence."

......and while Nacho put a scolding to Marquez, there was another member in that corner who was re-assuring Marquez, " you're fine, you're fine, everything is OK."

......thats proffesionalism. Every member in that corner knowing their roles.......Nacho's was to instruct and to scold if need be.....while another's was to re-assure, that the knockdown was only a slight setback, lets get back to what you know best.

The cornermen's work is sometimes taken for granted, but in many instances can be big factors in a fight.

Same thing I noticed. Cotto did well, winning the first round, when strictly boxing to score. Maybe he didn't meant to score, but thought of that as "feeling out". But the moment he tried to brawl and "put the foot on the gas", he was beaten to the punch, and rammed from pillar to post. A great fighter would have realized that, and at least had started an attempt back to basic boxing, and trying to win the fight just via outpointing Manny. Winning 7 rounds by just slightly outlanding Manny would have got him a W on his resum, but that shitty south american machism that forbids just winning when you can't "beat up" the other guy buried him.

    Smart wins.
