Cotto weighed in@146 v Clottey - would TWO lbs less make him a walking corpse?

if welterweights are getting severely dehydrated weighing in 2 pounds below the limit (147), they should effin move up to the next division.

I think cutting to 144 would have an adverse effect on Cotto's performance.
He weighed 139 for the Malignaggi fight - if he had lost an extra 2 pounds I think it's fair to say he would have struggled more than he did (even though he put a beating on Paulie I thought he looked below-par).
Getting down to 147 seems to be a struggle and I'm sure any pro boxer would tell you that losing an extra 2 or 3 pounds when you're already draining yourself can leave you extremely weak.
I'd love the fight to be at 147 - then there's no excuses and if Pacquiao wins no-one will be able to try and diminish what would have to be considered a staggering victory.

Dude....prior to the Josh fight it was Cotto who said he would like to fight PAC but not at a weight lower than 144. PAC was ringside b/c there was that potential he'd face Cotto. It was Cotto who wanted to fight PAC and PAC said after the fight with Josh that he would like Arum to make it happen.

I have no problems with the whole Catch weight thing. It's been round for years and many have went down this road to make some very meaningful fights. If PAC decided to campain as a WW then yes...he should fight at 147, but he's not. PAC is a Jr WW and he made that clear. He did it one time to fight DLH, just like Floyd faught ONE time at Jr MW to face DLH. That's all.

When PAC faced DLH he went by all DLH's rules as well...but that was PAC who challenged DLH for the PAYDAY as did floyd. So they gave the "cash cow" the reigns and followed the path of least resistance to ensure the fight is made. The PAC/COTTO deal isn't the DLH/PAC or Floyd deal. PAC is now in DLH's position, just like when Rick faught Floyd....Floyd was then in DLH's position and he called the shots for the fight to be at 147. IT's really not that complicated as everyone is makeing out to be.

Probably that fighting a legitimate welterweight at his peak was a step too far.
If it was a good, competative fight, I don't think a loss would hurt Pac's reputation too badly (obviously any hope of a Mayweather fight would go up in smoke though).
I'm sure some people would try to down-play a Cotto victory by saying he only beat a guy who started at 106 pounds, or some such nonsense though.
Plus, I'd have thought that the chance to win a title in yet another weight division would be attractive to Pacquiao.

I use to wrestle and have to loose weight. The trash bags, sweat suits, suanas all of that. I know how hard it is. But when you are campaining as a lower weight fighter you work extra hard to fight at the lower weights in order to have a size advantage when your match is on. Boxing is very similar....I never had to loose wieght like I did in werstling when I boxed but I'm sure they go through some of the same methods. Shane is smart, so is DLH....they are PROS.

They know what they can and can not do or weights they can or can not make. So if they agree to a weight, then obviously they "KNOW" they can handle it. Who are we to say they can't. We are not the pro fighters, we don't sacrafice like they do in order to make one of the toughest livings on earth. So let them handle the business and preparation aspects of this game. And we should enjoy the entertianment side of things.

THANK YOU "D"! These are grown ass men making history, a living and challenging themselves to build a legacy. In all honesty we are trying to BASH PAC for fighting the likes of the Shane mosleys, DLH, Hattons, Floyd Mayweathers, And Cotto's of the boxing world. Did anyone really....I mean REALLY think about this for a second. This is a former 106 lbs fighter.....now he's taking on WW and Jr. WW's....some were even Jr. MW or MW's. I just don't understand the logic with some of the posters who are claiming to be "Boxing" fans. More like fans of one or two "particular" fighters.

i agree we pay too much attention to weight on here.

but fighters dont have our level of fat and excess water. that 2 pounds is body it isnt spare material, that is IT.

pac is putting a lot on the line here. you think its worth jeapordising a multimillion biggest fight of the decade fight between pac and floyd just to please those of you who want to see him fight at welter. he has already proved himself, why should he be outweighed by 12-14 pounds at fight time. that is also unfair.

That is absolutely untrue. De la hoya wanted to fight Pacquiao at 150 pounds the same weight he fought Forbes in and wanted different gloves instead of Pacquiao favorite reyes gloves but Oscar agree with Roach to accept the fight at 147 pounds in which Oscar hasn't fought at that weight in 8 years and Oscar also let Pacquiao wear the reyes gloves. When Floyd fought Oscar, Floyd was the one that had to deal with Oscar rules with Oscar weight class, Oscar rings, Oscar choosing of the gloves.

True! DLH wanted it at a "CATCH WEIGHT", but Roach said the fight would be at WW. A "ONE TIME" thing to make the DLH fight. My bad. But the fight was made based on DLH's requirements...the venue the split and for the most part the weight. PAC moving up from 135, pass 140, all the way to 147. DLH from 150 to 147. Big difference. Before DLH faught at 150 he hadn't been there for 8 years either and he beat a guy PACs size in Stevie...not only beat him but shut him down. The gloves were never an issue. It was a disadvantage for PAC b/c anything abover 140 they use 10 oz gloves instead of 8. PAC was considered having less power than Oscar so the bigger gloves were not in his favor regardless of the brand. And they both chose their gloves.

Actually Oscar had to lose 4 more pounds to 147 pounds cause remember even though Oscar vs Forbes was signed to fight 150 pounds, Oscar fail to make weight in which he weigh in at 151 pounds. When Oscar was reported he weigh 145 pounds 1 month before a fight and was reported he got beat up by smaller fighters so i knew Oscar won't be the same going in his fight vs Pacquiao and it shows that Oscar have to lose 4 pounds well actually 6 pounds and only weigh in at 147 pounds on fight night is far more difficult and far dangerous then Pacquiao skipping 140 pounds to fight at 147 pounds.
