Assuming we are talking about the same thing (pivoting his glove near his face in a defensive manner that provides no actual defense, usually while retreating) I would love to know if there are earlier examples of this. I have watched Cotto since the Malignagi fight and I simply do not remember that move. It struck me as odd the first time I saw it.
Like I said, I'll have to rewatch a couple of his bouts first...and probably the Foreman bout, because like you said, I could be talking about something completely different. When I get time...I'll check out a couple of bouts were he is put under some pressure...Torres, Judah, etc.
Yes he would have some trouble. That is very possible. Just don't match him with Kirkland when he comes back. Williams pressures, but leaves himself wide open a lot and Cotto has great timing so that could be interesting. Against Martinez, Cotto would be the aggressor but that is a very difficult fight. We have to see if he will have made enough improvements to deal with pressure or if it just won't make a difference now and he can never deal with a lot of pressure again. He may never get a mental edge again. Only time will tell.
Yeah you know...if your bored shitless, and you want an action packed fight...just throw that on. And you've given me an excuse to rewatch it...:good
you mean that weird shoulder roll like move he does after getting hit flush? I've never really thought of it as some sort of "tick" as you say. I noticed he started doing that when he started to box more after moving up to 147 ( I think)
He came close to doing it with :38 left in 2nd round against Torres, but it really isn't the same thing he does now. Current Cotto would have spent most of the second and fifth rounds doing that defensive tick. I'm so used to seeing him do it nowadays that I was actually surprised when he didn't in the Torres fight!
I know exactly the move your referring to and its weird but i'm not really sure when he actually started to employ that move into his defense. i think we're going to see a lot of different things imerge from him and specially in the defense dept. Its his biggest weakness and with the new team things are going to tighten up.
Why are so many people making an issue out of those few right hands that Cotto took?? this is boxing, you will get hit now and then. Was Cotto expected to go in there and not take a single shot????? Mayweather got rocked by Mosely but then he took Shane to school. So even the best get hit, its how you come back from taking a good shot that shows where you are at. To Cotto's credit he got back to his boxing in the later rounds and was landing some nice jabs and left hooks. I think some people are looking a little too deep in to the shots that Cotto took. Also this is Cotto we are talking about, he does usually ship a few shots to give some back of his own. But what I saw in that fight, was a solid looking Cotto, showing improvement.
It's not the fact that he got hit with the shots. It's how those shots caused him to react. He reacted like they were bigger shots than they were. He wouldn't have reacted THAT way to THOSE shots Pre-Margarito.
What are you talking about? He took one which he walked onto, which caused him to lose his balance and only looks bad in slow motion. he took another which made him step back and then resume his offence. Not once was he hurt. You're just imagining things.
It's not that he was hurt. It's the kind of defensive posturing those shots caused him to go into. I just watched the ****in Torres fight and he was so much more confident and reacted totally different. Like an entirely different fighter. He showed Foreman mote respect than he did Torres and Torres could bang.
Well, I guess he does need to build his confidence up again. he's also worried about cuts, i'd have thought. Maybe it's protecting his scar tissue. But, he's always been a little twitchy when he's been caught in the past. Manny seems to have removed his worst habits (the deep knee dips and such), but there will be work to do. Let's see what his next fight is and what difference Manny makes then.
I agree in regards to the fake shoulder roll, its very wierd. His other problem is that when he throws the jab he doesn't bring that ****ing left hand back to his chin! He gets countered with that over hand right everytime he jabs. I am sure Emmanuel noticed this and needs to correct it.
