Q: What about clinching? Why didn't you clinch (in the Margarito fight)?

Cotto: If you have seen all my fights I'm not a boxer who likes to clinch. I like a pretty clean fight. You will never see Miguel Cotto clinching on purpose in a fight.

Q: Isn't that the smart thing to do sometimes?

Cotto: Yeah, sometimes it's the smart thing to do, but I don't like it.

Very respectable philosophy, if not in the best interests of his career.

Q: Don't you think clinching would help you?

Cotto: Screw clinching, why clinch when I can throw low blows all day
and get away with it? You seen what I did to Judah, right?

    :rofl

Bearing in mind he nearly removed Zab's balls, I would say his statement is nonsensical.

Clearly an idiot who will get KO'd, again, the next time he faces Margo......unless he changes his philosophy. Not that I'm saying clinching would have saved him last time out.

Another guy who never clinched was Fernando Vargas. I think, taking into account the chin Cotto has, he better start asking his country man John Ruiz for hugging tips, before he gets Vargased.

There is a difference between clinching and holding - Cotto's stamina is awful, his chin is decent though.

I suggest he learns how, or changes his principles.

I don't know about Cotto. Is the stuff he says just bravado, or does he really mean the things he says?

When he insists he will not cling when hurt, this surely shows he is too proud for his own good, to win sometimes you have to fight intelligently. Most of his fights now are likely to be against good opposition, gone are the days of fighting nobody's to build up a fledgling career.

And if you are fighting good, highly rated boxers, then no matter how good you yourself are, you are going to get tagged sooner or later. It is these moments that can keep you in the fight.

On his upcoming fight against Jennings, Cotto says:
"I don't know anything about my opponent. I have not watched any tapes of him."

Well, if he's telling the truth here, then i think Cotto and his camp need to wise up and get serious. Being ignorant about your opposition isn't being clever - it's being stupid.

Cotto is a fool to himself then. He has a lot of talent, talent that could take him to the highest levels of the sport but we will all be talking about what might have been if he carries on with that mentality. I had him in a wide lead after 5 rounds against Margarito ( I think I even had it 50-45) and if he had slowed the pace and clinched now and then he would have won.

However, saying that, part of me is glad that he didn't because we wouldn't of had the excitement we did!

Right now, John Ruiz is somewhere shaking his head in disgust.

Normally I'd agree with you. You should always watch videos of your opponents but having followed Michael Jennings career here in England I'd probably say that he'll get away with it. Jennings is a wonderful man and a credit to boxing. I'm really glad for him that he'll be fighting at The Garden and will earn a lot of money for the fight, he deserves it. But he really hasn't got any chance at all. I'd be surprised if he lasts past the 3rd round.

If he don't start clinching Margi when he gets in close. Then he will lose the rematch.
