I know this will spark alot of opinions and criticism. Some people will say his technique, his great training camp, his natural size or his power. Although all of those things played key parts, I think that his biggest advantage was that he is a natural southpaw fighting orthodox. His best shots were his jab and hook. He was actually throwing the jab as a power punch while he had Floyd on the ropes in a defensive shell. Also when Floyd tried to move off of the ropes, moving to his right as you would for an orthodox fighter, Cotto was able to catch him with hooks and more power jabs. I think it was something Floyd wasn't used to and therefore gave Cotto some success. Thoughts?

It's possible. When Floyd is on the ropes, many fighters make the mistake of throwing a bunch of hooks at him and they all get rolled. The best punches to through are straight ones, so Cotto's power jab had success getting through.

I think his craft on the inside and being able to vary is punches fits in more with what you're referring to. Though it definitely helped to have that power jab.

Shane and Oscar were stronger than him. With his skill level, he can get around physical advantages. Strength was not really an issue.

I think Floyd could handle 154 if and when he wants to move up permantly. I think he has issues with actually putting on that much weight, and then having to take it off if he wanted to fight at 147 again.

Just like Cotto would/could hardly go back to 147 and be as effective.

  9. Cotto picked up Floyd like a little rag doll just to let him know that he could toss him around easily.

The Size and the 10 ounce gloves were his advantages, had Arum let Mayweather fight Cotto at 140, Floyd would've knocked him out.

Size, Strength, and a great jab were Cotto's greatest assets.

  12. Yes, because the 10 oz. gloves didn't benefit Floyd at all.

Floyd might not have been standing if Cotto had worn 8 oz. gloves.

Floyd would have annihilated him at 140.

The glove size definitely helped him at 154 IMO, but still, Cotto put on a great show. They both did. Floyd sprained his right hand too a week or so before the fight.

Who nearly got KTFO? Who was rushed to the hospital and rumored to be pissing blood? With 8 ounce gloves all those clean right hands that Floyd was landing would've likely took Cotto out.

During the broadcast Merchant and Steward were talking about how Floyd wanted 8 ounce gloves but Cotto wanted 10.

They went on to say that they almost fought with Floyd wearing 8's and Cotto in the 10's but the commision said they had to both be the same.

Manny Steward, to help nullify the negativity Merchant was trying to inject on the fight from the opening bell, suggested that 154 fighters should maybe use 9 ounce gloves.

Steward said Cotto had said he wanted the bigger gloves to help block with.
