To be honest i tend to agree and have felt this way for quite some time.

If he were fighting an elite 154lber id be picking him to lose... but bes fighting canelo, someone whos as big a mirage as cotto is at this point imo.

    agree with op and kirk

cotto reminds me a bit of Oscar, in that his popularity and the tough fights he takes on has kept him in the spotlight for a long time, but when you take the gloss off of the resume, both Oscar and cotto are found wanting.

cotto beating Martinez was fortuitous in it's timing, and that's about as good as his resume at MW will get

He was the best boxer Sergio ever faced and took his crown. This thread is just another meeting of the Sergio fans support group. Look for them next on Oprah.

If you're going to make excuses for his stoppage wins I think you should also make excuses for his stoppage losses (PED's and loaded gloves)

    I don't agree with that.

You call Cotto's opponents cripples and claim he won because of old injuries but make no mention of the fact that Alvarez arguably didn't deserve to get the decisions over Lara and Trout. Doesn't seem very consistent, seems biased.

Shotto was an excellent JWW, this blown up JMW/MW version of him is an illusion, getting shut out by Austin Trout says it all. Jermaine Taylor would have a field day with Miguel

Beating a cripple is one of his best wins? Come on man Cotto deserves more respect than that

Interesting note, maybe he was never as good as people thought. HOFer for sure, not an ATG.

So many wrote Cotto off after the Manny loss as being completely shot, but he bounced back pretty well.

I think his standing in boxing is pretty much correct, a very good fighter in the era where there were some greats in and about his weight division. His record of 4 losses is just a product of him taking tough fights time and time again. I really struggle to understand why anyone would hate of Cotto, a quality entertaining fighter, who has taken on a lot of tough challenges in his career.

Definitely has. But IMO some of his wins deserve asterisks.

Every single veteran fighter out there would have asterisks on some of their wins
