Who will be Miguel Cotto's next opponent? Will Cotto, be the old Cotto he was or is the old Cotto gone after meeting Margo?
I had another thread goin' on this a little earlier where I suggested Berto, but then I remembered : haven't they been talkin' about the big Puerto Rico vs Puerto Rico deal w/Cintron vs Cotto aka 'Victims of Tornado Margarito'? I think Cotto takes Cintron or Berto by KO, but both are live underdogs. Cotto seems to me to be the sort of guy that will not be broken by only one bad loss. He'll be back better than ever and while I don't see how, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he found a way to beat Marg in the rematch . Of course I'm a huge Cotto fan that has declared myself 1.3% Puerto Rican on his behalf, so my opinion may be slightly biased. :good
Probably Cintron, it's not clear so far but Cotto will fight again this year according to Arum on the same card with Margarito. If both win then a rematch is on early next year.
I would like Cotto to take a fight against an 'C' level opponent like Jesus Soto Karass or Sebatian Lujan before getting back in with any legitimate threats.
All depends on how he performs in his next fight, if he struggles or looks bad then we know the result already if not then he definitely has a chance. I want to see Cotto use a different tactic, he was actually doing good countering but he should do what Williams did and hold everytime Margarito positions his self to fire back. I know it's me asking for this fight to be ugly but he needs to apply a different tactic and NOT go on the ropes with him kneeling down like that and welcoming those uppercuts(Margarito's best punch). He has a chance of course but all depends on his next fight for me, I have to see that fight well enough to decide. If he doesn't look good enough then he's doomed and possibly earlier than the first time. What do you think?, any predictions or thoughts?
Honestly I feel Cotto should use his jab more, go to the body often, and believe it or not stay in the pocket using tight circles(ala Juan Diaz vs Katsidas). Staying in the pocket will take something off Margos punches and I don't think Margos footwork can keep up with tight circling. Think about it, everytime Cotto jumped in the pocket and let off 4 and 5 punch combos Margo really never had an answer......until Cotto pulled out, then Margo was able to stalk and measure. So instead of pulling out after unleashing a combo step to the side and rip to the body, get the jab going etc. You are correct in making a clear assesment till after his next fight, it will certainly tell us alot..........What about Collazo-Cotto for a tuneup???
Yeah, that's exactly what I think too about the improvements he should apply. He just pissed the HELL out of me standing straight in and allowing Margarito to land the easily predictable and slow punches over and over, it was so predictable that I would guess what Margarito would throw and when he does he lands it thanks to Cotto standing there to take it. He needs to also keep the fight in the middle of the ring, going to the ropes is what Margarito WANTS and that's where he shines. A fight with Collazo won't be bad but still won't prove too much. I think Cintron should be the best choice right now to be honest with you, at least Cintron can punch hard enough to test Cotto a bit, even though a body shot will finish him off but he should be a better test. Collazo will most likely move and box and he doesn't really provide any serious power to test Cotto out, just a wrong tune-up if he's fighting Margarito next.
Im going to guess one from left field and say the Ukranian that holds the WBA interim belt. Though I hope he doesnt. That could theoretically force a Margarito rematch. Though I dont think he would need to "force" one as Tony would be happy to oblige I imagine. Plus with the WBA's history with this kind of thing they seem happy to contravene their own rules and allow two or sometimes 3 champs to defend at the same time because it simply means more sanctioning fees for them.
Good point on Collazo, however I am sort of anxious to see him fight again and perhaps land a title shot.....I would favor Collazo over the chinny Berto....depending on which Collazo and which Berto shows up I think Collazo could counter Berto into oblivion
He definitely could and easier than expected but we'll have to wait and see. Just being patient to see who they have in stock for both Cotto and Margarito next, that should answer a lot of questions about the possible rematch. Hoping to see Cotto in better physical and mental shape, he also needs someone that can take him twelve rounds, if he shows stamina issues against Margarito again, whether he applies a better tactic or not then he loses and loses brutally yet again. Against someone like Margarito you NEED stamina or you will get outworked the second half of the fight or even stopped.
Oh damn, how did I forget that. Baldomir could be a very good option for Cotto next as well, the man will guarantee to go 12 rounds with the chin he has and he's a pressure fighter as well. Pretty much perfect for a come-back fight for Cotto. Baldomir also mentioned that he wants to fight Cotto or Margarito next, don't know if they will consider him but he's also a very good option I forgot, for Cotto.
Not a bad idea Geergroove.....however many feel Baldomir is way past it and a decisive Cotto victory wouldnt mean much in terms of credibility. But in my opinion would be a good tuneup
