Not a bad assessment outside of the sarcasm. Martinez wasn't crippled. He was rusty though, and after that rabbit punch in the first, he never got it on track. Yuri Foreman, was more like a C level guy. Mayorga was garbage, as was Margarito the second time around. Delvin Rodriguez is also a C level guy. Yeah Cotto gets over rated, most popular fighters are a tad bit over rated though.

 

Well what is considered elite? Had Martinez beat Pavlik, right after both Taylor fights, and then KO'd Williams in two rounds, yeah he would be elite. Martinez fought the Pavlik that Hopkins already broke though. Williams was a 147/154 pounder, not a middleweight. Dzinziruk, as also a 154 pounder. Barker, wasn't even rated in the top 15 by the WBC, so DiBella paid them some cheese, to get Barker rated in the top 15. Barker had fought all bums prior to the Martinez fight. Pirog, Golovkin, N'Jkam, etc. would have all fought Martinez, but Martinez ducked. Macklin was a solid contender. Murray was a solid contender. Chavez Jr. had a name, and cruiserweight size, but nothing else, and still almost KO'd Martinez at the end. Martinez struggled with Barker, Macklin, and Murray, getting a gift against Murray down in Argentina. Martinez was always a tad bit over rated to me. His handlers knew it too, that is why they steered clear of Pirog, when Pirog wasn't injured, and also steered clear of Golovkin. It didn't have to do with money, because Martinez was getting his million and change regardless. Recall Martinez making Williams fight him above 154 claiming that he couldn't make the weight, then later claiming he would come down to 154 for Pac, and Mayweather. Cotto dished out the whooping, that Martinez deserved for refusing to fight the best milddleweight opponents, while calling out men two weight classes below him.

I got of track. Martinez was an elite Middleweight in the context of the current division, and Martinez being top three. Martinez is far from an elite middleweight in a historical context. Some of the guys Martinez defended against, wouldn't have even been top ten middleweights in Hopkins' middleweight era, and Hopkins middleweight era is considered mediocre. While Martinez would be a top ten middleweight in that era, with his chin issues, I think he would have had problems with guys Echols, Allen, Eastman etc. Martinez gets hurt by guys who aren't even big punchers now. Martinez wouldn't beat the Allen from the first two Hopkins fights.

Had you started following boxing any time before that you might have a leg to stand on where Cotto's resume is concerned. Since you clearly didn't, however, you don't.

 

The Clottey, and Mosely decisions were controversial, and Cotto's low blows bailed him out when he was having trouble with Corley, Torres, and Judah off the top of the head. He could have lost to any of those three had there been no low blows.

Okay so using them as examples you should realize the foolishness of judging Cotto by his career from light middleweight up (which is what you are doing by judging everything after Pacquiao, since he never again fought as low as welter...and in reality his last true welterweight contest - not catchweight - was Clottey) - that would be a bit like cutting off everything the Golden Boy did before mid-2001 and saying "who did he ever beat? Paper titlist Castillejo, Vargas already damaged by Tito, old Yori Boy with five stoppage losses already, Sturm in a robbery, Mayorga damaged by Tito, and tiny little Stevie Forbes who still marked up his face! Otherwise, all losses in all his biggest moments! Worst resume ever for someone with that much hype!"

...and let's just not even bother getting into the nitpicking that can be done on Chavez Sr., especially if selectively cropping his record to suit a negative-slant agenda. There are pages upon pages of documentation of that being done on this very site alone.

 

well said, i still think chavez sr and delahoyas achievements dwarf cottos but i see what your saying.

 

They do, but those guys are bonafide hands-down greats. (some will and do argue that Oscar was merely "very good", but then again some people believe in creationism...the world is full of idiots and crackpots...)

That leaves plenty of room for Cotto to be a borderline great with his achievements still being dwarfed by theirs.

i agree with borderline great, what gets me and what i don't agree with is some people on here over hyping present day cotto based on his two last wins which are extremely overrated in my opinion.

Had someone told me he would be the lineal MW champ after I watched Pac beat him down I would have laughed..

This is a huge accomplishment, regardless of Sergio probably not being at his best.

I think bashing Cotto for it is outright pathetic.
