Last nine fights at welterweight Joshua Clottey Michael Jennings Antonio Margarito Alfonso Gomez Shane Mosley Zab Judah Oktay Urkal Carlos Quintana combined record: 298-22-2 The man is a monster. Of those 10 fights, he has the one loss to Margarito and the two very close fights to super tough Clottey and Hall of Famer Mosley (two guys who gave margarito fits, one KOing him) Also, according to his record, Cotto has only face two fighters in his entire career of whom which had losing records. And, lastly, for comparisons to Hatton, i used to use this one back in the day. Hatton fought Carlos Maussa in his 30-something or 40-something pro fight and had fits with the man, won, but with cuts over both eyes etc. Cotto knocked Maussa out, easy, in only his 17th pro fight, when Maussa was undefeated. The same Maussa that somehow beat Vivian Harris. One more thing about his record, Cotto has never been knocked out. He has lost by Technical KO, but when watching the fight, you see that he basically wilted due to exhaustion and or giving up, whatever the case, never knocked out. He has been knocked down, wobbled and what have you, but never knocked out. That being said, to say Pacquiao is going to KO him is a long shot I think. Demarcus Corley and Ricardo Torres both rocked Cotto at 140 pounds. With the exception of the Margarito fight, which i think was a perfect fight to have to get ready for what Pacquiao will bring, Cotto hasnt been hurt at 147. not by hard hitting Judah, Mosley (who still has power at 147 as proven) or Clottey. Do not best against Cotto.
Slightly surprised how long Cotto been at welterweight now, I always feel like he has 'just moved up' But yeah, very good resume. Only thing I would say is that he's probablly at, or just past, his peak.
Great record - great fighter. He has a resume that many fighters would be proud of. I have to disagree with your point regarding Zab being unable to hut Cotto. Zab had him hurt numerous times with the uppercut, and shook him to his boots with a straight left in the second round. Zab was unable to capatilise on this though as he couldn't take what he was getting in return. If Zab had enough heart and will to stand infront of Miguel, theres a good chance that he would have stopped him.
true, i forgot Zab kept hurting Cotto with those upper cuts when Cotto came in and what not. i guess he just recovers pretty quickly
Cotto has excellent powers of recovery. Stylistically, Zab was a good matchup for Cotto as he was unable to sustain his attacks as Cotto was firing back - hence the reason he backed off and gave cotto time to recover. Marg on the other hand was a bad stylistic matchup for cotto as he didn't give him time to recover. The key to beating cotto is being able to stand in front of cotto, take what he throws at you and keep the pressure on. Fortunatley, there are very few fighters out there who can do this.
I'm not sure how much Gomez and Jennings bring to the discussion, but when you consider Cotto's comp at 140 as well as his 147 opposition, he does have a very good resume.
yea great fighter and great resume which will get alot better if he beats pac, which I think he will.
did you watch the fight? how did hatton have fits with maussa when he won every round and and then ko'd him? and the cuts came from headbuts not punches. and when hatton beat him he was a belt holder coming off a win against harris. when cotto beat him on cuts, maussa was green and coming off a win agaiunst a fighter with a 53-34-10 record. hasn't been hurt at 147? how come he quit against margo then?
