We all know that Cotto is a natural left hander that fights orthodox and his basic attack is with the left hand, be it a jab or a hook. But, more or less since the Mosley fight, I haven't really seen him throw the right with authority and try to cause some damage with it. Although he did try it vs Margarito, in the fights with Clottey and Pacquiao his right hand was basically non-existent. It's not that it was ineffective, the guy rarely threw it. Is it me or have you guys noticed this as well? Any comments/thoughts about it?
Cotto has never had much of a right hand. He did a good job with it against Mosley as Mosley was intent on not getting hit with that left hook. I believe he crushed Torres with it as well(but he has a glass jaw). For the most part though, he's been heavily dependant on that left hand throughout his career. His new trainer is probably not helping matters, that guy is a joke.
his right hand is poor, he's a converted southpaw, that much we know but his right hand is tremendously slow. Every time Pac opened up the flurries on him it was off of Cotto trying to put together combinations with his right hand.
Good points. But the thing I find weird is that from fight to fight Cotto seems to abandon the right hand more and more. He doesn't use it as he has been using it before and it makes me wonder why. Agreed, he doesn't have much of a right hand, but if he doesn't throw it at all it makes it very easy to the guy he's facing. I mean throw the damn thing, at least to score if not to hurt the other fighter. If the opponent knows you're not going to throw the right, then the only thing he has to look for is the left, which makes the fight a lot more easier for him and a lot more tougher on Cotto. Does his trainer have a big responsibility on this?
I think the straight right was an invention of Evangelista Cotto... once he went so did the good right hand.
Not really, he never really threw it in the Clottey fight too. And I don't think Cotto was looking out for Clottey's counter lefts...
In the early 2000s, Miguel fell asleep driving to the gym and crashed his car. He's had a six inch metal rod in his right arm every since the accident, which he says at times can be painful and other times just uncomfortable. I think this is primary reason he became so left hand dominant despite being a natural southpaw.
i'm glad to see i wasn't the only one wondering what happened to his right hand. you would think it would be the primary weapon against a southpaw.
He did throw a right hand here and there, that fight, but it wasnt enough. And it was a looping, overhand right, not really a quick, straight punch that could possibly hurt MP because he never sees it coming.
Hey, Carles. Welcome back. the first 5 rounds of the fight's all time classic, and I was on the edge of my seat and dreading the Cotto haymaker until the stoppage.
He didn't use it like he should.. Oscar used the right and it was one of the blows that buzzed Manny for a second,if Cotto wouldv'e used it more it wouldve helped Manny was there to get hit with that hand but instead threw wide rights not straight..
