Cotto always fades. He started fading at round 9. He was even beggining to fade against Margarito in the rematch. Honeslty, I don't think Floyd's shot to the body had as much effect as the thread starter said. It was Cotto missing shots, and pushing Mayweather. That's what zapped his strength. That, and history has shown time and time and time again that Cotto fades in the late rounds.
A tough, competitive fight, it was, BUT it wasn't close no matter how much you wish it was. Floyd's jab to the body and body work on the inside took its toll on Miguel.
Wasn't close? Cotto won 3 straight rounds at a critical point in the fight and not one round before that wasn't close. It was 5-4, 5-3 at worst and had cotto taken the 9th round it was pretty much dead even, or 1 point off. Why can't *****'s admit that Cotto gave Floyd all he could handle. The only rounds that weren't really close was the 12th and maybe 11th.
There is no question that body shots slow you down. However, cotto almost always fades around the 8th round of his fights. I think he is in excellent physical condition but he tries to punch at a speed that is faster than he can sustain. Kind of like a race horse that runs too fast early and cant sustain it. If cotto wasn't as preoccupied with trying to be spectacular and paced himself, he would benifit by it. Mayweather is a naturally fast handed fighter and it doesn't take anything out of him to punch often and with speed.
Dont know if its the reason but he landed some flush short inside uppercuts to the gut on the inside like he always does. And always 2 in a row. Cotto used a ton of energy though in that 8th rd. He fired off like 4 5 piece combos in a row.
I really enjoyed the fight and thought the intensity and tempo was fantastic. Cotto was not as sapped of stamina as in other fights though and I think a lot of that is down to Floyd not having as much power as guys like Margarito or Pacquiao. Cotto handled Floyd's power well and it showed on his face but the tempo Floyd fights at and his accuracy more than makes up for his lack of pop. I am not advocating triangle theory in Boxing as I know that styles make fights, but I do think Mayweather did feel the need to mix it more here because he knows his performance against Cotto would be compared with that of others. I think Floyd thought he could hurt Cotto more and failing that fight at such a tempo that Cotto would gas and get stopped. In the end he was happy with a convincing victory and a great fight. Floyd will probably put down his slight disappointment at not closing the show with a stoppage to the fact this fight was at 154lbs and he could well be right. I had all my v-cash on Floyd UD because I believe that whilst he is great, he does lack power and will find it difficult to stop an elite fighter like Cotto.
