Could a prime Herbie Hide have won a world title if he could have fought during the 80`s?

Was there any stage in the 80`s that Hide could have snatched a title at heavyweight if he had been born sooner? I feel Hide is overrated by some fans, but so were most 80`s heavyweights.

With the right breaks I think he possibly could.

I would have given him half a chance against Pinklon Thomas.

No gets battered. Only a slight chance against Berbick if he used his speed .

Given how all of those WBA guys seemed to lose fights they shouldn't, I think Hide could conceivably have bested Berbick, Coetzee, and Dokes. It's mostly just that those guys were really inconsistent. Witherspoon, Smith, and probably Thomas would have overwhelmed him.

I can see Hide staying in the top ten as a contender in the 80s, however.

It would have been interesting to see Hide against the 80s Foreman; I mean, he would have been ultimately doomed, but Hide might have been both sharper and more powerful than Qawi...and Dwight actually gave Big George a fight before the inevitable. Of course, in the end he would have been stopped earlier than Bowe stopped him, and probably knocked even more silly.

I could see him losing weight and stopping Jeff Chandler in 1982.

I think he could have knocked some of those guys out on the right evening. Hide was quick of hand and foot and had massive power. He was also in great shape which many of those 80s champs usually weren’t.. he was only manhandled by Bowe and Klitschko who both dwarfed him in size.. and the Bowe fight came after Herbie had been off for a full year yet still he rocked Riddick pretty good.

I would almost be declined to believe you if it hadnt been for the basic unmutatable fact Vito Antuofermo, conqueror king of hagler and the middleweights didnt tell me over a Rueben sandwich at IZZY's that he saw you throw the rock that caused the near riot at Coxasry prison back when you were both 16 yr old miscreants devoid of any consciences objector status vis-a-vie Ali in the Vietnam entango in Paris. You dont fool my you standing truthteller. I am on to your gambit.

Prime battles between Hide and the 80's belt holders and I'm saying no. But the 80's were a rollercoaster ride and like the great Larry Holmes would say, "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while!!"

I don't think he would get Berbick who's too durable but instead someone like Dokes having an off night, and Dokes is my 3rd favorite 80's heavyweight (Dynamite would obliterate Hide in any other scenario).

Yes, I believe he could have picked up a belt along the way back then. Some of the alphabet boys lost their titles as soon as they won em, not the most consistent of heavyweights. Guys such as Thomas and Witherspoon, he'd probably lose to and he didn't stand a chance with the top two Larry and Mike!, but yep given a shot he'd get one. Not sure how long he hold s on to it tho.

    nope.

Problem was those guys had pretty decent set of whiskers. And they often hung in there and not a ton of koby1 results.

Biggest problem is Herbie absorbing what the other guys do. And those hands at his waist will see him hit.

and not too many bouts are going to take place in comfy Norwich. Nope. It'll be Herbie taking his act on the road and fighting the DKP fighters. So all Herbie has to do is improve his defense by about 2 magnitudes. Become a road warrior. And better the DKP fighters in a cross promotion. Sure don't see it.
