He also predicted that Danny Williams would be Heavyweight champion of the world after he defeated Mike Tyson. You can't believe a word the man says.
Ali would not have had trouble with the size, he dominated 6"6 Terrell, the trouble would be that Lewis also had Olympic pedigree with the gold and was a strong talented puncher that was also confident...I dont think size would be a factor but talent would...Ali had the mental edge, speed of hand and foot....Lewis had the power and better offence
A prime Lewis would have given Ali a tough fight, but Ali anytime between 1964-1975 would have won. Probably over the distance. 1976 and onwards,lLewis would have taken it.
How did Hagler deal with Hearns' size? How did Duran deal with Barkley's size? How did Frazier deal with Ali's size?
I think Ali would beat Lennox. Ali's speed of hand and foot, his resilience and courage, his jab, his movement around the ring, and basically the fact that he is light years ahead of anyone Lennox ever fought, all of these things suggest that Ali would outpoint Lennox. Lewis would have his moments, he is too good a fighter not to, and on the rare occasions he could close the gap and put some punches together, he would really trouble Ali, but I do think those instances would be few and far between in the fight. Ali is too great a ring general and has too many gold qualities not to win this fight.
Size was not a factor at all for Frazier and Hagler against Ali and Hearns. Weak point. Ali would face a far greater size disparity and a far greater problem against Lennox than either of these examples.
Ali was what, an inch shorter than Lewis? Couple of inches in reach? Ali was miles faster than Lewis both hand and footspeed and his footwork was lightyears ahead of Lewis, or just about anybody else for that matter. I think Ali would manage just fine.
Could Lewis handle Ali's speed & movement? I thinks that would prove to be a more concerning issue than the first question? Lews was big, strong, but Ali was extremely durable. No explaination is needed on Ali's handspeed or fottwork. It would be interesting to see how Lewis would go about cutting the ring off so he could land a big bomb? Throwing just the jab followed by the straight right would not be good enough against a guy as good as Ali!
Do a search for Henry Cooper V Cassius Clay 1963. Cooper puts Ali on the deck at the end of teh 4th. Ali is saved by the bell. Cooper didnt weighed about 196lbs.
When I consider the combination of size, skill and temperament Lennox possessed, I think of Lennox Lite: Joe Bugner. Forget Terrell. Taller opponents like Bugner and Blue Lewis didn't give Ali much trouble either, if you're looking for a similar visual comparison. Muhammad showed that he could get underneath and score to the body when the situation provided an opportunity for him to do so with little risk. Lennox is a far more serious entity than any of Ali's taller opponents were, but not so much more so that he would actually manage to beat Ali. Greater size alone was no kind of asset against that kind of speed and elusiveness.
I used to think Lewis was underrated, now I believe he was overrated. He was given a gift against Ray Mercer and was knocked out by 2 B- level heavies. Now I'm reading on these pages that he's the greatest heavy ever and Ali wouldn't have been able to handle his size. However,I don't think Lewis would have been able to handle Ali's speed, footwork and resoursefulness. If anything,Muhammed had more problems with short, stocky types than the taller ones.Lewis would have had to have been on the attack rather than his jabbing, counterpunching self(thereby out of his comfort zone)and Ali would have danced out of his range and responded with quick jabs and movement.Considering that Riddick Bowe knocked Evander out years before Holyfield went the distance against Lewis twice(yes,it's obvious Lewis was robbed in the first),it's unthinkable that Lennox would beat Muhammad considering that Evander was close to the same size as Muhammad but nowhere near as skillful, fluid and clever.By the way, when Lewis beat Ruddock, didn't he weigh about 229,just above Foreman's weight, and when was he ever in a 14 round war like the Thrilla in Manila?Muhammad was just a better fighter than Lewis. It's that simple.
