Could any version of Larry Holmes beat the Tyson that fought Holmes in 1988?

Prime Holmes can do to Tyson what Buster did,

Don't think Liston would beat a prime Tyson. Undecided about Holyfield.

Do you think he’d beat Liston in a similar way to Bruno? Get low into mid range, avoid Liston’s long punches and beat him to the punch in the trades in mid range, and maybe look to set some things up over the top, like right hands over Liston’s jab and that Liston couldn’t stay away because he’s not nimble enough?

Liston-Tyson is interesting physically because Liston has all the reach, & Tyson has all the speed. To say nothing of the psychological match up.

Perhaps. Tyson was a nuclear version of Floyd Patterson. Much bigger, just as fast, harder punching and a concrete chin. Just because Patterson and Tyson had a similar style, doesn't mean anything here without factoring in Tysons physical advantages.

Liston would not be intimidated by Tyson--it would probably be the other way around!!

As far as a Liston-Tyson matchup--Tyson has the speed and explosive power but Sonny has the massive reach advantage and that sledgehammer left jab--plus he was a very skilled ring technician (as has been pointed out many times.) And Sonny was no slouch in the power department either! (One of the hardest if not the hardest puncher in HW history!!)

Ultimately, I think Tyson wouldn't be able to deal with the combination of Sonny's wrecking ball left jab--his power and his 13" reach advantage. Liston was a tougher, bigger, stronger fighter than even peak Tyson--plus he was a better overall boxer. I'd go with a Sonny KO or stoppage in roughly 5-6 rounds.

    I don't think so

I think Tyson would eventually land the right and would follow up with speed and power.

    Probably a later ko

Holmes has mind and brain points over Mike and in an overall fighter assessment, that matters. But it would never get to a point where it would matter in a H2H sense, is my assumption. I hate saying it. Anyone can beat anyone. Any great can certainly beat anyone, but this is just a flatly horrendous match for Holmes because the places he holds advantages won't be a factor. He almost certainly gets crushed. There's never a worse match like this for a highly durable boxer, in the way of likelihood of getting KO'D, than Tyson/Holmes, on paper, maybe. I feel like he gets knocked out if they fight a hundred times.

The 1978/79 version of Larry Holmes who beat Norton over 15 rounds, won 22 of 23 rounds against Shavers, and entered the ring sick and still beat Mike Weaver would give 1988 Mike Tyson hell.

Mike would give Larry hell, too.

I'd take a peak Holmes. Absolutely

Don’t y’all know? Ron Lyle could have taken both Holmes and Tyson on the same night. :D:D:D:D:D
