I think Morales has the best chance from that list. He was freaking unbreakable at 122 in his era. What a sweet fight it would be.
I favor Gomez at 122 against most fighters, best chances though I feel Gomez has the stuff to beat them are: Erik Morales,Barrera, Fenech,Paquiao
MAB would've SD him...MAB is a clever fighter with a few dirty tricks up his sleeve. He can switch from boxing and brawling in a blink. JMM is another candidate.
Now this is the kind of post you could call a masterpiece. This illustrates with videos what I was going to try to pot into words about how dominant and excellent Wilfredo Gomez was at 122. I have always said that Gomez was THE BEST Ever AT 122, and was the equivalent, at that weight, of Duran, Monzon, Ali, etc. I would pick NO ONE at 122, EVER, to beat Gomez, or, for that matter, to even last the 15 round limit against him. He was, again, at that weight of 122, a lethal combination of power, speed and efficient, cold blooded killer instinct. He got a little excited against Zarate, and hit him while Carlos was technically down, but THAT fight was his masterpiece, and it wouldn't have mattered anyway. He was like an outerspace alien at that weight, so superior to his opponents that it would have almost been fair if they were allowed to come into the ring against Wilfredo wearing sparring gear, like headguards, and such.
I would infact favour Joan at 122 over Pac. Pac at 122 was so undeveloped and was just going on with sheer gifts of speed & power. Joan IMO is one of the best 122 ever, literally had it all. Some say he was a big puncher at that weight but I disagree, he was a good puncher. To prove youre a great puncher you have to prove it against great fighters.
I would pick Barrera by decision at featherweight, but at super bantamweight, he had yet to develop the all around skill set and versatility he showed later on when he faced bigger fighters. He was more of a come forward, aggressive fighter who liked to fight in close and dig shots to the body. I see Morales, who was longer and had a more effective left jab at this weight, having a better chance of beating Gomez. If prime Marquez and Gomez fought at featherweight, I'd take Marquez by TKO in about 10 rounds. Gomez was an excellent fighter at featherweight, but not a dominant powerhouse.
Wilfredo peaked at 122lbs and it seemed as if he was invincible for a good period of his career. I can remember vaugely the older gentlemen in my neighborhood saying if he would stay away from the drug abuse and women he would surely become a legend. My father told me that journalist from Puerto Rico reported he was doing coke drinking and sleeping with groupies on a cruise a week before his fight with Salvador Sanchez.....the rest is history. Its unfortunate Gomez never got his chance to avenge the loss, his career seemingly drifted down hill from that point on, tough he did score some good wins after it never seemed to satisfy that thirst for revenge.
I have only seen 3 full fights of Gomez's big victories at 122, so I can't give good analysis of how a fight between the two would go and don't have a very good knowledge of pre 80's fighters in general, but I think Guzman is nearly unbeatable at 122. He was unbelievable there, pretty much a perfect fighter. He had one of the greatest mixtures of speed/power ever at bantam and under. He could box beautifully from any position and fire pinpoint power punches from strange angles, quickly step back or to the side into a different position and repeat. He was physically huge for the weight, but not drained. His chin has always been great and his stamina was significantly better than it is now. His reflexes were Jones-like and he could dominate fighting in a number of styles. He could attack beautifully and fight aggresively with great authority, then switch it up and fight as a counterpuncher very effectively. In the middle of the ring, on the ropes, from the inside, from the outside, he was great. All of his punches were incredibly fluid/accurate and he would go from the head to the body in combinations with lightning speed effortlessly. Damn, imagine if he got to fight Pac back when the match could have been made there. He would absolutely destroy him. He toyed with B levels and made them look amateurish. When you consider how Guzman tries harder and focuses more the bigger the fight is, the thought of seeing a truly 100% Guzman against another elite at 122 is.., but very sad at the same time. Hopefully he could beat JMM-Pac/Juan Diaz to create a legacy past bantam and get a lot more people to recognize his greatness. At 122, I would definitely favor Guzman over one of my all time favorites, Barrera, also Morales and Fenech. There's no doubt he would KO fighters like Zaragoza, Marquez, and Vazquez. I haven't watched much Jofre/Olivares, but I can't see such old fighters competing with someone like Guzman. I'll watch more of Gomez and once I learn more about him I'll be able to analyze this a lot better. Can anyone recommend some fights other than Gomez-Zarate/Dong Kyun Yum/Pintor?
