1986 and Trevor berbick is the wbc champion. Opposite corner a young undefeated Mike tyson. Only 20 years old facing the veteran champ. A experienced contender for many years berbick had a rep for been solid yet In less than two rounds tyson was The winner. One punch had caused berbick to crash down three times. Which other lineal champ could do that.. At tyson s age? I'm sure there's a few guys could stop berbick, but at 20??
I think there are very few past heavyweight champs that could do that to a berbick at 20 years old to be honest.
Earnie Shavers at 20 years old was very much capable of annihilating Berbick. Hell , Shavers as a teenager was probably flooring grown ass men.
Tyson's record is impressive no doubt but it's not hard to see how he achieved it let's be honest here. Tyson at 20 was a hell of a lot more developed and mature than a certain Cassius Clay who won the title at 22. I think Clay's title victory is more impressive considering this and the person who he beat.
No doubt ali at that age beating liston is incredible. No one gave him a chance and probably rates as one of sports biggest upsets ever. And tyson beating berbick was in a way expected, it's just the manner he did it. Berbick was a seasoned vet and tyson a professional for just over a year and 20. I think it just shows how special tyson # could # have been, how good he was at that young age. And then to ko Holmes that no one else ever did. He really was phenomenal
To be honest, Louis was more 21 by the time he was demolishing top contenders. Sam McVea perhaps, but I rather doubt it.
Tyson at 20 *21 was beating guys that had been boxing years, berbick, Smith, Holmes, tubbs and Thomas. For that short span of time there weren't many heavy s doing that at that age. Only a young Louis was intimidating heavy s at that age I believe
Well maybe not at that age. The other side of the coin is developing that early makes for rapid decline at an early age and not having the same skill set for long. And we did see Tyson go downhill at an age when most heavies are going up the ladder. Heavies usually have a shelf life of 4 to maybe 6 years of their prime. Then, they have to alter their style or make changes to continue fighting top 10 competition. Another thing with that fight was Berbick himself. Good call firing Eddie Futch for the Tyson fight. Then again, there's a reason Trevor went through a ton of trainers. And just who thought it was smart of Trevor to come out bombing trying to trade with Tyson? His forte was conditioning and a mauling style. A grinder. He was never a hitter and there he is trying to back Tyson up. It is one of the dumbest strategies I've ever seen. And he was as comfortable doing it as he would have been circling around the ring flicking jabs while moving his feet like Muhammad Ali in the younger days. So Berbick gave Tyson exactly what he wanted. Mike did not have to break the guy down or fight smart or anything. Nope. A silver platter and it was the worst possible way to fight Tyson. So as far as strategies and the tools to pull it off go===this ranks up there with King Roman and George Foreman.
Are you going to answer the quite straight forward thread title or just hate on and attempt to discredit Tyson as per usual? Me, i'm going to think on it. It was an incredibly dynamic performance regardless of age.
Great performance from Tyson and no....not many could have done that at a mere 20 years of age. Most of the alltime great champs either had n't developed enough physically at that age or simply had n't turned pro yet. Joe Louis is the only one who comes to mind here.
Shavers wasn't even fighting pro at age 20 and was losing to the likes of Ron Stander even at age 25.
