Ok, so question is could any other lineal heavy weight champ do what dempsey did to willard? Yes jess was 37 and by no means active defending the title, but up to then he'd been a pretty durable guy. What jack did was absolutely unexpected. Knocking willard down 7times and coming close to winning it by first round ko. Which other lineal champ can do it. I'm thinking tyson, frazier, liston maybe but not many in that manner.
Louis ,Tyson, had the speed to emulate Dempsey's result imo.I doubt Frazier would have gotten such a quick ko, I think his power was a little below theirs. Foreman may have come out like he did against Frazier and Norton and achieved it.Liston perhaps ?
Could definitely see jess hitting the canvas if caught by a Louis right!! Especially if Joe comes out like he did with max,!!!!
I think Tyson is the only one who would have a realistic chance of replicating or surpassing the performance.
I think that very few people could have done it, and I think that they are all significantly bigger than Dempsey.
Maybe foreman in his younger life, when he smashed frazier and Norton to the canvas. Can perhaps see him catching willard in the first and really hurting him, and when George has u hurt your in trouble!
Imagine if Foreman could have waited over Jess while he got up and then hit him with those gloves. Or Lewis. Liston. Louis. Tyson. Willard would have been driven through the canvas like a nail. Can't see him getting up six times with those guys
who can do it by weigthing 180 pound thats the question!taking down a 240 pound world champ like that...dempsey was a monster
This issue gets brought up from time to time, and rightly so, but people let their imaginations run away a bit. Every fighter of that period, fought under those rules. They developed tactics to deal with them. If it was a huge deal changer, then it should be reflected in the results of the period, and it should mitigate knockouts of all fighters of the period. You can’t take something away, without giving something back, where a rule in concerned!
