It's gash the way this thread will appear every few months. Foster, Marshall, Spinks and Moore would all be favourites for me. Many others could do the job. Jones is a very serious proposition at the weight, but this idea that he is untouchable is really, really odd.

a lot of it comes down to the fact that jones didn't get to/take the opportunity to really test himself against the best. in his prime he appeared unbeatable and it makes it interesting to consider what styles and fighters might have given him trouble as we'll never know

No they won't. When all your stoppages are regional bums in the beginning of your career and controversial back pocket ref rippages in the couple instances after - there is no denying the Sven Ottke similarity. Only a fool would stand boldly in front of that weak ass CV/resume.

What ESB "calzaghe fans" (defined as his mom, girlfriend, child, and other Welshmen (I regret to say)) might post in his defense is always utterly absurd and laughable anyway.

RJJ was the best light heavy in history IMO...his hand speed was unmatched and he had tremendous power as well...SPINKS beat RJJ in his prime? NOT A CHANCE.

Roy beats just about anyone you can name from 160-175 in a one off fight.

But had he been a middleweight in the 60's or a light heavy in the 80's he isnt coming out of those eras unscathed..though he might still be the dominant fighter eventually, he is dropping the ball at some point against the calibre of fighter that was around at those weights at that time. And I guess we really dont know how Roy would have dealt with that, he may well have just fallen apart mentally after tasting defeat...or he might have sucked it up and gotten even better.

Id definitely have him the slight underdog for the Spinks, Foster and Charles matchups...I tend to think he loses those more often then he wins them.

Which fights exist on film of Marshall? I haven't seen him fight before.

It's nice that he FINALLY made the IBHOF. He beat about 7 or 8 ****ing HOFers. It would've been nicer if he got inducted when he was alive.

The idea that he's unbeatable is because people fall for the flash and flare over skills and substance. Jones was fine when faced with guys two levels below him. When he faced the better guys, who had game plans or were somewhat complete fighters, he looked a lot less special.

He had poor fundamentals which he got away with because his LHW reign was against such lousy opposition. Spinks was much more awkward, Conteh was much more rounded - either canes him.

No one's unbeatable anyway. The fighters who were undefeated, on never lost in their prime, well that could easily be different in another era, or simply under different circumstances. Roy never lost in his prime other than Griffin's acting job. Well if he was fighting in the 40s, and had to fight 15-20 times a year and often against stiff opposition, he most likely would've had some off nights or bad stylstic matchups and lost. Fighters back then, well if they had the luxury of an HBO contract and nice paydays to only fight 2-3 times a year, maybe they never would've lost til their mid 30s either. Who knows really?

It's hard to compare him with some of the former LHW greats in older times due to less film existing. Admittedly, I haven't seen enough of the film that does exist of some of the past greats. As it is, I make him a slight underdog against Foster & Spinks at LHW. Although I make him a favorite over Qawi, I wouldn't be surpised if he dropped one to the Camden Buzzsaw either.
