If Bruno had challenged berbick in 86 instead of witherspoon could he have become the champ that year. Was frank good enough to take out berbick?
Witherspoon ( overall) was a grade better than Berbick in my book, so Frank has a chance. The fact that you could't be sure which version of Berbick turns up , makes this tricky. One thing for certain is that Berbick's durability makes it a dangerous fight for Frank unless he takes him out early/ish. Don King nicknamed Berbick " The Three Faces of Eve" ( the title of a book and film about someone with split personality)
Bruno could have beaten alot of fighters. it all depended on his mindset. bruno gassed out often and mentally reacted badly to getting hit in the head. keep in mind this is a guy mike tyson couldnt properly knock down in 2 fights. Bruno just wasnt quite an erik morales or evander holyfield mentally
I think he has a better chance against berbick that Tim. For some reason this fight in my mind has shades of Bruno v tillis. Can see berbick been awkward and throwing looping wide punches and Bruno just jabbing away. Berbick will look more and more despondent as they move into the 6 round. Berbick face will be swollen and cut. Bruno s right s will be slamming in to his face hard and berbick can do nothing back. At the end of the round the ref gets called over to Trevor corner to be told he can't go on.
If It's a question of "could" then yes. Berbick was not consistently good and lost to worse men than Bruno. That and in 1986 Frank gave Tim Witherspoon ( who I felt was better than Berbick )a pretty good fight. Now weather or not he "would" is a different matter.
That's a good point Mr M. He most certainly could imo but big Frank could get him self gassing and knocked out on the other hand. But just feel against berbick he may just have done the job
Just why did Bruno have such stamina problems? He had one of the best heavyweight physiques ever and I wouldn't have thought that there were many harder or dedicated workers than him when it came to training camps. Was it just too many weights that made him overly muscular or just a mental problem?
Pretty even fight. I could see a decision going either way. Both guys were pretty much in the same class. Berbick had stamina issues pretty bad in the later rounds so that could be an issue. Berbick was inconsistent to a degree and that as well could haunt him. I dont see the jab being an issue for Berbick. He beat Thomas and Thomas had a better, more active jab than Bruno. Berbick also had a very good chin so I dont really see Bruno getting him out of there. I think this fight is a boring, awkward chess match for six rounds and then breaks wide open as Bruno starts gassing.
A bit of both I think with Bruno. Very muscular and if he didn't get them out of there by the mid rounds he was carrying around 3 house bricks on his arms. And frank was a anxious guy, not overly confident. Once again If he couldn't ko them quickly the nerves kicked in.
Bruno at this time was not mentally prepared and hadn't learnt to relax and tired easily. Berbick win against Thomas ( who had draw with Coetzee his fight before ko Dokes for title and defeated Witherspoon for title and defended against Weaver ) was good in fact very good and because of the Tyson blowout was forgotten. Same as Witherspoon and Smith fight . Berbick by late tko
