    I'm afraid not.

Jones fought Griffin twice...both times at Light heavy weight.

Never say a great counter puncher could never replicate that shot. This is boxing, anything can happen.

Of course. But I’m referring to the fact that Del Valle was a big southpaw.

Canelo obviously wasn’t landing the straight left that Del Valle threw.

    So what?

That’s only because he hadn’t had the opportunity.

From the list that you posted in post no.80, Roy hadn’t cracked the top 10 at that point either.

    What difference does it make?

Do you think that Saunders was also better than a 93 version of Roy too, on the grounds that Roy also wasn’t ranked?

It doesn’t matter if either of them were in the top 10. We can see how good they were simply by watching their fights.

He would do well vs the Roy of the past 5 years or so but not against prime Roy though it would be interesting. Not sure if Canelo would be able to adequately counter him.

You are basing this on ranking and not on ability and performance.

The version of Hopkins who Roy fought in 1993 was clearly a very good-great fighter, as you can see by watching his fights.

A year before he fought Hopkins, Roy easily beat Jorge Castro.

The same year that Roy beat Hopkins, he easily beat and knocked out Thulani Malinga.

The year after, he iced Tate in 2 rounds before moving up to SMW where he embarrassed Toney.

So around the same time, Roy easily beat Tate, Castro, Malinga and Toney.

The fact that Roy couldn’t beat Hopkins as easily as what he could beat those other guys, tells you that despite being unranked, pre-prime and somewhat inexperienced, Hopkins was an elite level fighter at that point.

Jones would of made Canelo look real bad, either by knocking him out or winning a very wide decision.

Jones isn't only the bigger man, he is the faster man here. Bad match-up for old freckles. He would have an easier time fighting Bernard Hopkins.

Canelo lands that straight right with accuracy and power. I think hes sharp enough now at his peak to land that shot on a 168 pound roy, who did rely heavily on reflexes and also did alot of unorthodox things in the ring, because ge was so damn gifted.. i think a peak Canelo would labd his fair share of shots against Roy

Going to well against the grain here but what ever. Rose tinted glasses are out again, yeah Jones moved faster and was very accurate clever and slick in his prime. Totally respect him as a fighter, if we are talking the canelo of today. RJ would definitely win rounds but don't see him having the power to keep canelo at the distance he would prefer. Canelo can soak up that pitta Patta offence these days and will happily wait for the one shot too end it . Just look at the BJ's fight as an example now there are different levels there but you get what I'm saying. Canelo hits a lot harder and see him finding Roy in the mid rounds wobbling him to the core and finishing it. Know this won't be a popular post but have a think there's a bit of truth there

Know RJ was old when he fought calzagie but put under pressure doesn't look the same.

Roy was freakishly fast and it not only kept him out of danger most of the time, it made his opponents hesitate because before they knew what was happening Jones would land a hard shot or 5. Jones at 175 was great and at 168 and below was incredible. Look at the way he crushed Tate, who went 12 hard rounds with Julian Jackson.

I have nothing but respect for Canelo, he's probably P4P #1 or close to it right now, but Roy was on another level.

Yh get where you are coming from but when it's comes to chin's just don't see JR taking many of canelo's power shots. Especially if he backed him up on the ropes. Maybe I'm wrong but this would be no easy night for Jones

Possible, but Jones' chin wasn't an issue until he was past 35. The Del Valle knockdown was legit but Jones got up and then continued to dominate Lou. Jones would block Alvarez against the ropes and counter him with hard shots. I know Bryant Brannon was just a fringe contender but he tried to bully Jones against the ropes and threw a bunch of shots, it didn't end well for him

Jones was a very clever efficient fighter with great movement not disputing that. just get the feeling all that swagger could be undone very quickly canelo would only have to time that one bomb properly and think he would be in trouble. Canelo does hit very hard. Jones was an awesome fighter in his day shame we will never find out. If it did go to Jones think it would be on points, be surprised if he could put the Mexican paddy on the canvas

Knocking out a past it and drained Kovalev does not prove his power is that great at heavier weights, the fact that he was being outboxed before Kovalev tired doesn no bode well for him.

Thing is Roy hit much harder than Saunders and was much more proven at middleweight. And his reflexes and counters surpass Saunders by a wide margin. If Canelo took that long to find Saunders, he probably wouldn't find Roy to finish him.
