    What the hell...

Liston lost to a fighter with a lengthy reach, and a good sharp jab..Not to mention was dropped by a left hooker in his previous fight. Williams was nothing like that fighter legacy wise, but then that fighter developed greatly later, and probably wasn't too much different from a peak Williams at the time.

Carl's height, jab, and tendency to get up after being decked beats Sonny......

Yup. Possible. I'd also say that Jordan Keepers would have a chance.

The mention of Carl Williams brings a big smile, mm.

When he fought Gerry Cooney in San Francisco, Tommy Gallagher worked his corner.

Tommy called my wife and I in L.A and asked us to join him, which we did.

When we got there, Tommy discovered that the other cornerman was a no-show. So there was a guy in Frisco Tommy knew, a fight-buff dentist, that looked like the missing cornerman and had been beggin' Tommy for years to let him help -- do anything.

Tommy rang him up and he agreed. We met at the arena. Tommy told him exactly what he wanted him to do:

"Cooney's a monsterous puncher and comes out bombin' with that left hook. All I want you ta do is sit below the ring apron check the time. If Cooney drops Williams, I'll yell, TIME? And you tell me exactly how much time is left in the round. Ya got it? I yell, Time? You tell me exactly how much time is left" The dentist nodded.

Tommy rehearsed it four-five more times, to be sure

So the fight starts, and sure enough, Cooney unloads the left hook and drops Williams. Tommy shouts to the dentist, "TIME?"

    "8:30, the dentist shouts back.

That was a great story but, Cooney never fought Williams.

Williams does pose a style threat to Liston. I believe that Williams would out jab Liston for a bit. This would cause Liston to start pressing, and maybe even go for broke. I think he would connect of Williams, and stop him around 5.

No need to apologize. It really was a good story, and made me laugh. I just didn't recall the fight, and checked it out.

I still believed it happened, just against someone else.

Truth be told, Carl Williams had 'blessed physical tools' and a fair degree of skills. But that chin. And with a monster called Sonny Liston. No way. Liston by early kayo.

Sure, so long as Liston doesn't throw any left hooks.

I think Williams would be petrified and Liston would kayo him early.

If it wasn't for the chin, I would say Williams beat Sonny.
