Agree 100%. At this level trainers are overrated. Cotto is a world class fighter trainers can advice a fighter but a fighter at this level was developed through the years from amature on up. In other words he is what he is and in the heat of battle is giving it all he has skillwise.

even though there were some shots which did snap manny's head back there were too many times cotto didn't pull that trigger to trouble manny in the first four rounds. So when manny was on the ropes cotto was tapping him with pita patter shots

also confidnce wise when that starts eroding power tends to go too due to fragile mind fragile body scenario

I think it actually would have made a difference. I just wouldn't say to the extent that he'd win or not. Good question though. Steward knows Cotto pretty well, I think and I think he did publicly offer to train him for this fight, guaranteeing a knockout. Of course.

    Same result.

Most trainers including Emmanuel Steward would have been questioning if Pacquiao could take legit punishment as a Welterweight......we never got to find out those answers in Pacquiao's fights with DLH and Hatton.....

Steward imo would have had Cotto do exactly what Cotto did vs Pacquiao. As soon as Cotto sucessfully outboxed and was landing clean hard shots on Pacquiao in round one, he'd have advised Cotto to get in closer and physically maul and push Pacquiao around.....

Its a different story now.......knowing what we know now that Pacquiao can take a Welterweights shot, and compete physically with them......if Emmanuel now trained a fighter with similar strenghths to Cotto's, he certainly now has better information and insight to develop a winning gameplan.......
.......but based on what Steward knew then, there's very little doubt in my mind Steward would not have helped Cotto.

As a sidenote.....Emmanuel Steward did'nt know his fighter Wlad Klitchko so well when he had him go for broke and try to take Lamon Brewster out of there as fast and as brutal as possible.......
.....little did Emmanuel Steward know that if Wlad gassed, he'd fall to pieces to the extent he'd hyperventilate and quit fighting.

......after that loss by Klitchko, Steward in subsequent fights and in a rematch later with Brewster, formed a full proof gameplan to not only punish Brewster, but to do so at a pace where he did'nt gas.......

In fight one, it was Steward who was on Wlad exhorting him to get Brewster out of there.......he essentially was just as much at fault for that Brewster loss than Wlad was.
In the rematch, knowing in hindsight what Wlad could exhert and what Brewster could take, Emmanuel put together a wonderful plan to easily deal with Brewster and make him quit.

Steward would have been no help to Cotto if he had trained him for this past Saturday nights fight......
......absolutley he can be a big help if he trains anyone else for a future fight with Pacquiao.

Why would he do that when his gameplan is to trap Pac on the ropes and take him out??:huh

Pac's power is what stunned Cotto's team. And mixing it with speed and accuracy, those many times Cotto didnt pull that trigger could have been the result of hesitating to get hit by another power punch.

yes, absolutely..... after the second round Cotto's corner kept telling him that Manny only has the left and to back him up.

    Cotto was 150 fight night....terrible strategy !!!!

Good thoughtful analysis. So, if a rematch were to occur with Steward in Cotto's corner, you'd say he's got a decent shot? I'd say at the very least Cotto would have had a better shot than he did with the corner he had. After the 1st KD, where it was obvious Pac's power was legit and it had already been shown that he could take some of Cotto's shots, Steward might have been able to get him adjusted and have him box rather than mix it up in the wild exchanges that Pac loves. Doesn't mean he would've won the fight, but if he can avoid that 2nd KD, that's a different fight. Very different. IF's...If's.....If's......

I don't know if he could have won, but he definitely could have done better.

No way would Steward let him abandon his jab.

We'll never know. I'd like to think so because any other trainer would have been better for Cotto that night, Santiago is a joke...You can make an argument that Roach made Pacquiao better so maybe Steward can do the same with Cotto. It's up to Cotto to be willing to learn and better himself and it would take time, not a few months before a fight.

Steward would have helped some, but Pac was way too much for Cotto.
