Just wondering, why did Cotto picked an inexperience trainer like Santiago especially with a big fight with Pac?:?
Cuz he felt comfortable with him and his corner...He needs to leave aside this whole family/closeness thing and get someone who will tell him what he is doing wrong and correct it, give him good FIGHTING advice on how to adapt DURING the fight and come up with a nice gameplan and exploit the opponent's weaknesses. However, I think Roach said it best when he stated that "Cotto is his own boss."
I dont think Eddie Futch could do anything with Cotto now........beatdowns the kind suffered by Cotto at the hands of Margarito and Pacquiao are hard to overcome. Cotto can very well still keep competing, but imo he'll never be the same fighter pre-Margarito. As for the the Cotto-Pac fight itself....Cotto could have very well have changed the tide of the fight had he made a concerted effort to strictly move to the left and box Pacquiao......my view of it however is that team Cotto's mindset from the start was that they were stronger and that it would be in their best interest to take the fight to Pacquiao. .....so even if they wanted to box after getting hurt by Pacquiao, its not what they had worked on for the long haul of the fight in training camp. .....jab, move to the left, and counter with authoritative shots.......the key being constantly be moving to the left......and like Nacho has always said about defending Pacquiao...."you have got to be very alive and aware when Pacquiao lets loose with his bursts."...... .....the only thing is that the Nacho gameplan can only be executed by a very skilled fighter that is extremely well diciplined at his craft. Certainly not an easy thing to do. Its never easy beating a great fighter.
Don't know what the **** you're talking about. Steward's style of training is all bad for Cotto. :verysad I've said this several times before, but Ronnie Shields would have been the perfect replacement for Evangelista Cotto. A guy who teaches fighters how to work well off the jab and he'd also improve Cotto's gaps in defense. Steward? Pleeaase.
I voted for option B. A veteran trainer surely would help equip Cotto with a better gameplan and a proper technical advice on his corner come fight night. But I'm sure that Steward wouldn't also see it coming that Pac would just walk through Cotto's best punches. It'll be more competetive, but pac will still emerge as the winner.
He said it was cuz he was comfortable with Santiago, who was his old trainer's aid for years. Imo 4 months was plenty of time to get well acquainted with Steward. I had actually hoped that not only would Cotto take Steward in for this fight but that he would become Cotto's new, permanent trainer. Sad news was the fight result for Cotto. . .sadder still is the fact that he has already publicly stated that he intends to keep Santiago as head trainer. This decision does not look good at all for Cotto's future as a top level fighter.
The problem was that Cotto did not land nor throw enough. Cotto is actually not that big a puncher, like say, Valero for instance. Unlike Valero, Cotto, lacks one puch KO power. His KOs are cumulative. I think he only has one 1st round KO in his career. . .against a nobody. Even compared with other left hand dominant orthodox fighters like Trinidad or DLH, Cotto's left isn't as strong as theirs. He wasn't landing enough to cause damange. . .nor to gain Pac's respect.
Cotto needs to tighten up his defence. He ate way too many shots in that fight, and always has. Steward would show him the jab mixed with his right hand a bit more. But overall its Cott's defence which lacks.
