Body work, should have smothered Marg from the start, he COULD have pushed him back with body work and smothering inside fighting, which on a few occassions, he did push Marg back and Marg's workrate is always much less. I thought boxing was the wrong plan anyway. Josh Clottey gave the blue print on how to school Marg, smother/inside work sharp.
Like Merchant said in Cotto's last fight against Gomez Cotto had fallen too much in love with the concept of him being a boxer. Cotto believed his own hype and what got him this far. The arrogance he showed against Gomez was also clear indication of the wrong direction he was headed.
Cotto fought brilliantly until he got hurt in the later rounds. He just never recovered. Perhaps, he could have moved less and fought more - but that might have sped up the inevitable.
The body shots were definately missing tonight. But if Cotto was gonna move this much, he needed to be in shape enough to hold up for 12 hard rounds. This fight reminds me a lot of Corrales/Freitas.
The only thing is clinch. He connected flush on Marg about a million times with right hands and left hooks. It just didn't do anything. Cotto did what he had to do except clinch.
He abandoned the jab, he abandoned the body work....but most importantly he needs to improve his stamina. With better stamina and a more consistent jab and body work he would have won......also clinch when in the ropes....why in the hell was he exchanging with a guy with granite chin.
Bullsh*t. He landed HARD, FLUSH shots all fight long and it did nothing. So jabbing and anything else wouldn't have done nothing. He should've clinched intentionally instead of when he was just hurt. You can't improve your stamina when you are running almost every second for 12 rounds.
IMO, those uppercuts where the icing in the cake, but it was not the cause of Cotto's defeat. The body work did the job for Margo. You can see from the start of the fight that Margo was mixing up his punches very well. He didn't just concentrate on Cotto's head. He would often go to the body especially in the early rounds. By the 7th or 8th round it was obvious that the body punching was affecting Cotto as his workrate noticeably went down and seemed to be getting tired. You'll also notice how Margo's workrate started to pick up by those rounds?
Bullsh*t Cotto could've hit Marg with a sledgehammer and he still would've kept on coming. The ONLY chance Cotto had was a decision win and he would've had a chance if he clinched and slowed down the pace of this fight.
Cotto fought a perfect fight, basically, given what he was up against. He could have been KO'd in the 6th or 7th (can't remember which round he was hurt badly in), but he hung it. He gave it everything he had, but was simply walked down and destroyed. There is absolutely nothing he could have done to alter the result. And if they meet again, he will be KO'd in fewer rounds. Margarito, as Kellerman said, 'broke' Cotto. Like Trinidad did Vargas.
Sherman Tank fighting a German Tiger Tank. 75 mm vs 88 mm cannons. When the treads finally got blown off, you are on the ropes and no place to hide. Then best to abandon the vehicle.
Not sure he could have done anything differently. Cotto's few weaknesses just happen to match up perfectly with Margarito's strengths.
Wtf? Do you realize I was talking about Margo NOT Cotto? Those body shots I was talking about were from Margo NOT Cotto. I was giving credit to Margo, genius. Just calm yourself down son. Breathe. Take care of your heart.atsch
I think he was trying to get Marg out of there quickly by KO due to the busted nose that was affecting his breathing, he probably didnt think he'd have the time to break him down gradually as the nose was getting worse as the fight went on. I dont know what he was thinking of when he dropped his gloves in an act of bravado and took those shots from Toni in the middle rounds coz I reckon that was the turning point. Props to Toni for coming forward all night but if there is a rematch I really think we will see a very different Cotto in there. He just wasnt his usual 'strictly business' self tonight but some of the greatest fighters in history have returned from the face of adversity.
Great post. Wasn't it in this fight that he actually started to mock Gomez at one point? I remember being shocked, as this was not typical at all of Cotto.
