He got badly wobbled by 172 pound Georges Carpentier. I think not.

The untainted answer to your question is that no one could take those shots.

Carpenter was considered one of the best fingers in the world when he fought Dempsey. Incredibly well conditioned with great ko power in his right hand.

I think that the pertinent question is more whether he would have taken them.

I don’t think that his chin was as good as Foreman’s for example, but I think he was much better at fighting through the fog.

The chances are that Lyle or Shavers would just get blitzed.

Foreman, Quarry, and Ali took them, to name a few. They would have taken Carp's best too.

The untainted answer to your question is that Carpentier was an overrated media creation who while being in tremendous shape, and having a legitimate powerful right hand, had lost to the best fighters he had faced or won with some controversy. He bounced those right hands off middleweights Billy Papke and Frank Klaus all night without making a dent and he was better fighter then than when he fought Dempsey. The fact is that if Carpentier hurt Dempsey like that then Lyle and Shavers (two fighters who outweighed Carp in shape by 30 and 40 pounds respectively) would flatten him with their punches.

I tend to agree with you, maybe because of the way Firpo dumped him too.

Carp was much, much faster though. a key reason he was able to connect. Speed was also a reason why Patterson was able to drop JQ.

Jerry was similarly sized to Dempsey. If he could take the shots of Shavers [without even realizing he was being hit] and Lyle, then I'm not inclined to rule out Dempsey withstanding and recovering from those same punches so cavalierly. [Looking at how Shavers-Ellis began, I'm not entirely convinced Earnie receives the chance to get off first though.]

Have you seen the entire Carp v Klaus and Carp v Papke fights ?

Well, that's almost like saying Billy Conn wobbled Joe Louis so Max Baer's punches would have flattened him. The difference being Conn didn't even hit hard for a light-heavy.

I wouldn't bother to list a dozen more analagous examples. You know.
