The problem was Hearns was essentially a Light Heavyweight upper body who was able to get down to 147 pounds. He was just devastating at both 147 and 154 pounds. In fact he was bloody explosive at 160 pounds as well.
Perhaps Duran could win, that is always a possibility. he is Duran, he is an alltime great and he has a great right hand and a will to win if he had Hearns hurt or backing up. Hearns had all of the advantages and would land his right easily enough, so Duran would have to take it in order to get his right hand in later on, and he would still have to take the jab of a guy who had an 11 inch reach advantage and a speed advantage. Duran's plan would have to be to be aggressive, and I just don't see much difference in other fights, but had he fought him in 1989 at 168, Duran had a better chance than in 1980 or 1984, yet... and still I think Hearns stops him by TKO in about 7 or 8. At welterweight I think Tommy stops him in 4 or 5..
Right that is your sad opinion. I told you a fact. Hearns actually did beat Duran and he just didn't eek pass him. Hearns destroyed Duran and he would always destroy Duran.
Mediocre at 147? He lost once there to Leonard and beat Palomino and Leonard there. If that's mediocre, cheers.
Not really - a fully switched on and bang up for it Andre Berto is never beating Floyd Mayweather on his worst day.
Without taking anything away from on of my three favorite fighters, Hearns would have always been a very tough fight for Duran. The boxing styles and body types as well as the actual size of the fighters all favored Hearns tremendously.
