I think what he ment is KO power in both hands...Louis,Dempsey,Marciano,Lewis,Foreman,Liston...those guys had 2 hands
Given Frazier's style, I don't think so. Joe's aggression would work lots of times otherwise, but not against a guy way bigger and stronger. Foreman is forever his brick wall. Although, I think Joe might have a chance for a decision win if he fought more defensively.
George said he was scared of him the first time fighting Frazier after watching Joe stalk and knock down Ali in the FOTC. In fact, it took Joe Louis to boost George's confidence going into the rematch against Frazier. George didn't want to have to fight Frazier a second time, but he knew it was the only way to get a rematch with Ali.
I remember George saying that in his autiobiography. I think he was being overgenerous. Going by what happened in their first fight, there was no reason for George to have been scared of Joe.
George said he was scared of Joe coming out of the dressing room in Jamaica. He didn't even want to look Frazier eye to eye before the staredown and in his autobiography, it was Archie Moore was screaming at George to make eye contact with his opponent. Maybe George was being respectful of Frazier by saying this now, but in the interviews prior and post fight, George said he was scared of Joe.
Oh, I'm sure he wasn't exactly scared, but certainly with a few butterflies before the first bell in Jamaica..and he'd be crazy not to, given Frazier's credentials and how Foreman was truly stepping up in levels that night. Foreman does a great job of staring Frazier down in staring down at Frazier in that classic shot. And I see him, yes, a bit shaky in the first minute or so. But he soon realized Frazier had nothing to worry him and began the demolition. Sadly, the answer to the thread question must be - though never say never, especially with Joe Frazier pounding the gloves together and straining for the fight - no. Cus D'Amato said it best: no heavyweight who ever lived could survive George by coming to him, and swarmers like Dempsey, Marciano and Frazier couldn't beat him in a million years. (I disagree about Dempsey, though, because he could box.)
A prime Joe Frazier at 202 - 208 lbs, could give Foreman a much tougher fight than what he showed in Jamaica 1973, especially if Frazier uses the same techniques he did when he fought George Chuvalo. Chuvalo was stronger than Frazier upper bodywise and he punched pretty hard too, putting the pressure on Joe in that fight. Frazier used his jab and straight right with more circling and pivoting off his lead foot against Chuvalo when he was pressured himself. Joe stood right in front of Foreman with no footwork, believing his ability and experience would be enough to get him the victory and it didn't. Frazier could actually box, better than decent with a good right hand when he wanted to. Not saying he would've beaten Foreman, but it certainly would have helped his cause if he found his right hand and used it more against Foreman.
Frazier knew ONE way to fight get inside and throw, that is a recipe for disaster against a heavy handed bomber who is bigger than you.
Points well taken. In fact, I was considering mentioning Joe's jab, a very good one at his peak, myself, in conjuring a winning battle plan for Joe. And no doubt the best Frazier is more durable, mobile and sharper than in '73. But with Joe, the point is, to win, he still has to come to Foreman, head first. And that is disastrous against Big George and his huge short uppers. I think Joe's right is pretty irrelevant because it is a body punch that can exact a toll over the distance, but it's too little, too late, in a shoot-out against George.
I stated earlier that if Frazier fought Foreman with the strategy he carried into their rematch, I think Frazier could stand a chance. You might be tempted to look at the 3rd round, and say Foreman will always be able to catch and hurt Joe. Just realize that this is after the Manilla fight, Frazier was 10 lbs heavier than in his first fight with Foreman, and Frazier is nearly 3 1/2 years older than his first fight with Foreman. Also look at how Frazier was able to survive the 3rd, and come out and give a good account for himself in the 4th. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmVAILcrt0o[/ame] This content is protected
Were talkin about 2 of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Goerge biggest puncher and Joe biggest left hook. Of course Joe has a chance with the money punch & and if he can get his head in Georges chest and pound away who knows what happens, but this is the heavyweight division one punch can end a fight
Frazier did NOT have the power to ko Foreman with one punch ,he rarely kod anyone with one shot. He was an accumulation puncher who eventually broke you down with a saturation bombardment,he needed time to do this, and, meanwhile he would be walking into Foreman's bombs. In their first fight Frazier lands two good left hooks, result ? Nothing.
