Could Frazier have done better against Foreman with better gameplan?

If Frazier had better gameplan against Foreman do you think he could have done any better? I think he should have stay on the outside behind jab, avoid Foremans punches and counter. Then he may have chance to take it to the later rounds and when Foreman gets tired Frazier may finish him.

Yes Frazier lost the second fight 5 round KO, when he stayed on the outside. Had some better success, but Frazier was in his prime in the 1st fight. Could he have do more better in the 1st fight with that style?

I agree. Styles make fights etc.

Ali and Frazier would always have a war - Foreman would always blitz Frazier but Ali would have always found Foreman easier to deal with than Frazier.

    Same with the Ali/Foreman/Norton triangle.

yup styles were just too formidable for Joe .. all he had at his best would just get stunted by foreman .. it's the case of big good guy is better then small good guy

Conventional wisdom holds that he was just doomed in ten of ten with Foreman, but who knows? Tweak his game plan too much, though, and you're discussing a completely different Frazier. He pretty consistently throughout his career both embodied and was exemplified by his trademark style. Kind of hard to separate him from it.

No chance Frazier beat Foreman. He had two cracks and was brutally koed both times. A mythical third bout obviously would not produce a Frazier win no matter the circumstances.

Joe obviously didn't think he would have trouble with George in the first fight and therefore didn't have a proper game plan. Joe did have the proper game plan in their second fight but Joe was just too war torn (and not in the best of shape) to pull it off.

Joe could only fight going forward, with the possible exception of Tyson, no man was ever a prisoner of his style more than Joe was. Even a prime Joe, say the one who beat Bob Foster ( I think Frazier's peak) would have been demolished by Foreman. The reach, the power, the chin, the size, just are not there. Only the heart was.

If Frazier still had two eyes and was still able to punch on the way in then the first Foreman v Frazier fight would not have been a whitewash. It would prevent this result being the lazy and ludicrous example held up every time in taller puncher v shorter puncher matchups. In fact Foreman was still extremely green as Ali was later able to exploit. This is seriously over looked.

Frazier fighting the way he always did during his 1968-71 prime would be enough to give him a serious chance against ANY champion from history. He would not need to adapt from that. knockout accurately on his most frequent lead punch? Dangerous at long and short range. Phenomenal work rate? This is a unique talent.

Of course George was a unique talent too. I think they could continue to fight each other when Joe was at the wrong end of each other's career and George would always win.

However, it's rare we see any two guys meet at their absolute best. When George met Joe this certainly was not the case.

When Frazier fought Ali in 1971 he still had the footing, accuracy and timing to beat an 82" reach to the punch. Pity was, that was the last time he could do that.

No, I am not. There are several other people here who think prime Frazier beats Foreman.
