Just finished watching Thrilla in Manilla. Great doc. So my question is was Ali ready to go after the 14th round. Both fighters looked done. Frazier looked finished and could barely see yet he wanted to continue whereas it's reported that Ali wanted to quit. When Ali sees Frazier's corner cut the gloves he collapses from exhaustion. So was this Frazier's fight? Should it have gone the extra round? Could the upset have been pulled?
Fraizer only had one good eye and the good eye got busted up. He would've been basically blind in the 15th round. Fraizer's trainer made the right decision.
I dont think so,and knowing Alis history of never giving up as well i dont see it happening Joe was worse of then him.
Ali would win that round every time - fraizer was thru. Evidence shows Ali would never have quit.. The documentary is all opinion from fraizers boys..
Go watch that documentry they had on HBO. According to a lot of those people being interviewed, Ali was about ready to topple himself due to exhaustion and dehydration that's why he collapsed immediately after the fight. In fact, they say Ali himself was close to quitting on the stool, Eddie Futch simply beat them to the punch so to speak. If the fight had been allowed to continue it's hard to say who would've pulled it out in the 15th. Ali was reportedly dead tired, but Frazier was the one that looked worse for wear. I still say Frazier would've been the one to drop first. He took a bad beating in that 14th round and looked ready to go.
Angelo Dundee said that Ali told him to cut off the gloves after the 14th but Dundee ignored him. Ali has said that he was going to quit. Whether or not this is just talk or if Ali was really too exhausted to go on and would've quit we don't know for sure. It wouldn't surprise me if he had nothing left even though he was winning. The pace was so fast and it was 100+ degrees in there. But Frazier was ****ed at that point, taking a horrendous beating. One of his eyes was bad to begin with, and the other guy was closing up. I don't blame Futch. I remember Benton saying if he could do it all again, the only thing he'd really do different was to tel Frazier to jump up and down between rounds and act like he had a lot of energy to try to play with Ali's head.
Ali looked bad as he sit on his stool. It seemed as if his heart was beating into overtime, you know that feeling, where your heart feels like its gonna explode when you go way over your workout without conditioning. The dude was using his training as an excuse to bang that fine broad instead of training.
I think Frazier gets him. Ali spent what little energy he had in the 14th trying to get Joe out of there. Like all of his best laid plans, it worked. However, Ali had shot his load and would have dropped once the first decent shot landed.
Ali was dead tired could not even get off his stool. However Frazier was blind no guarantee he could finish Ali and what if Ali KO'd him with a punch he did not see coming. I agree with the decision but I think it was possible
Ali was pretty much done but Joe was far worse, fighting basically blind as others have mentioned. I remember reading somewhere (sorry, I don't remember the source) where Futch claimed Joe said something like "Yell 'right' or 'left' so I can block" or something to that effect. If nothing else, I think Ali survives it and, if I remember the cards correctly, Ali could have lost that round and won the fight. But...you never do know, do you? Maybe Joe would have been able to put Ali down and out. But I doubt it.
Frazier had absolutely no steam left and couldn't see anything. Ali didn't have much left in the tank himself, but he had enough. Joe might have made it the distance, but it would have been pointless to take the risk. Futch made the right decision.
