Could George Chuvalo or Jerry Quarry take a prime Mike Tyson

I think both fighters would pose very interesting problems for Mike? George would almost certainly take what Tyson had to offer, he was such a tough SOB I find it difficult to believe that he would get stared down or bullied. Talented fighter...

Jerry Quarry - another excellent fighter, possibly overlooked because he had his time in such a talented division, but Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers - some ability. Shavers in one round. Another problem fighter for Tyson and surely good enough to hold one version of the title or another in the 1980s? I'm not sure that Tyson fought a fighter this good during his 'prime'?

No, neither one could win the big one.

Being a face first fighter known for being able to eat punches is not going to win a fight against Tyson. George has zero chance.

Quarry was the better of the two despite actually losing to Chuvalo. At his best he would have gone to the ropes and tried to counterpunch Tyson. Bad idea.

Both would lose on a TKO before the midway point.

Chuvalo could end up like Andrew Golota except without the quiting but brain damage added, though those are freak injuries.
Surviving a combined 5 rounds against Foreman and Frazier isn't going to keep you standing against Tyson.

Bodyshots here, elbows there and an uppercut to follow.
Any men can fall and a left hook clean to the liver will make any man fall.

Bear in mind that my exposure to Chuvalo and Quarry is limited** but I echo the other posters as well. I think they are there to be hit, and that's a recipe for disaster against a prime Tyson. Tyson could also take a shot, and I don't think either of these two could control him otherwise.

**Aside or tangent -- Any recommendations of fights to watch outside of the those with Clay/Ali, Frazier, etc. for Chuvalo or Quarry to get a better idea of their skills?

Also, was Quarry considered a legitimate challenge to Ali when he came back?

No, neither one would fare too well vs Tyson..dramatic, short fights ending in tko's would be the result. Oddly enough, I think Oscar Bonavena would have done better than either one of them bs Mike. He had a more unorthodox, harder to call style than either Jerry or George that may have been comparable to his relative greater success vs Frazier than the other two.
Why drag Bonavena into this scenario? i dunno...I just group the three of them together from their common era.

I think Quarry had the better chance because of his solid chin and toughness but Jerry did have trouble with speed...Quarry handled the punchers pretty good and loved to mix it...I think I would have to go with Tyson but Quarry had a shot...Chuvalo would get hit too much and too hard so the RSC before George goes into 2nd gear

Swollen with a smile. George was built like a **** brick house. I think Mike would have trouble finding the knockout button w Chuvalo and see George being able to take it the scheduled 12. I love Quarry and would love to say "hell yea" Jerry could take Mike but I see Jerry being more prone to getting knocked out than Chuvalo however I think the fight gets stopped due to Jerry getting beat to the punch like Ali did to Jerry. Jerry would refuse to go down against "kid dynamite " as his heart would not allow such a thing to happen and the ref will instead make the decision for him. Love all three of these guys . Interesting scenario .

A prime Tyson? Absolutely not. Not even close. Idiotic question.

The two biggest punchers Chuvalo actually beat were Quarry and Doug Jones.

He outweighed Jones by nearly 30 pounds and lost every round to Quarry in one sided fashion with his face busted up and swollen grotesquely before landing his hail mary.

That fight alone doesnt speak well for either fighters chances against Tyson but there is nothing in the records of either to suggest they could rise to that level of competition and win.

Certainly not Chuvalo who lost to far lesser fighters every stage of his career.

Quarry had the skills and style to make it interesting, but both come up way short. Chuvalo more so. His chin won't mean **** when he's being pummeled on the ropes and not able to adequately defend himself...

Quarry lands some good punches and makes it interesting before he gives in to the inevitable, unlike Chuvalo, who is essentially a punching bag from the first bell.

Chuvalo survives the first few rounds afterwhich Tyson mentally implodes and closes up shop.
