That Toney did? Their chins are similar, both middleweights... Did Toney simply hold the weight better letting him affect a completely shot Holyfield more than Hagler ever could...? Could Hagler break him down?
Possibly, but it's not a guarantee. I feel Toney was naturally a bit bigger than Hagler, I actually believe he had a slightly superior chin, but more importantly Toney had faster hands, was more skilled defensively, and didn't rely that much on his strength or punch to be great. I rate Hagler higher all-time of course, I think Hagler beats Toney at 160, but Toney was the type of fighter that can go far up in weight and be successful. His handspeed, defense, and chin are his best qualities. While Hagler has pretty fast hands, excellent defense, and a granite chin, he was more dependant on his strength and power than Toney was. Holy was pretty much completelly shot by then, so it's possible, he could outbox that version of Holyfield who had slowed a lot, but that is not for sure and I don't see him beating Holyfield as emphatically as Toney did. Even so, I'll pcik Holyfield, very likely he gets to Hagler late an ends it, despite how shot he was.
Hagler would have been beaten up. Some fighters are able to carry thier weight better than others and more importantly some styles are better suited for moving up in weight than others.
How the hell could anyone even take a guess about a guy that never even fought at super middleweight? Well, there it is. I guess our only guess can be in the negative.
What a mental question. Hagler would have beaten badly by Michael Spinks at 175 let alone Holyfield at 200. That's because he was a middleweight and was never going to be anything but
Toney was more than just a fat middleweight in 2003. He'd already had about 38 straight fights in the 168 - 220 pound range in the previous 10 years, and was probably already well grown on HGH, steroids and other potions and nutrition.
After Hagler - Hearns, Hearns went in to congratulate Hagler then said.."you move up to LHW and I'll take care of the middleweights". Hagler said "you move up". Typical Hagler
Nah id have to say overall Hagler was the superior fighter to James Toney. As far as moving up though Hagler wouldnt be as succesful as JT. Theres a reason Hagler stood at MW that was his natural weight. He was a strong Mw but not a big mw. I see him more comfortable at JM than SM or LH much less moving up to Cruiser or heavy. Cant see him even beating a washed up Holy, James is a naturally biggger guy than Hagler. At Middle i like Hagler all day and id bet the ranch but in the higher weights he wouldnt have been as succesful as James.
