Who could fault Hagler for not moving up? He could have done SMW, but the best competition at LHW is asking too much for him. He had plenty of good rivals in his glamor division, & he did not have a nig frame, already lean & fairly heavily muscled at 160.

It is unknown how much of a shot he could have taken.
With that thick skull maybe he would absorb things fine at LHW. Then there is the dichotomy between a ghard hitting man in a division & the freaks.

That fact he fought in one weight class gives him points in my book, he stayed in one and he dominated it. plus super middleweight wasn't even a division till the end of his career.

Staying put is fine but he'd be on a whole other ATG level if he'd gone up and beat some of the very tough late 70s/early 80s light-heavies.

I think so! But Hagler declined a match vs. Qwai so we'll never know for sure.

A marvin johnson, saad muhammad, and definitely bob foster could knock him out. As well as Michael Spinks, and possibly mustafa muhammad.

There were some huge bombers at 175. Spinks and EMM had monster power and Saad loads as well. I don't think Marvin would have done real well at 175, just a feeling.

Certainly would have had nightmares in his own era. EMM's power and countering would have had him shackled. Spinks would dominate sleepwalking around jabbing if need be. The more Hagler forced the more peril he would be in, like with EMM.

Spinks and EMM could be a bit lazy, Hagler would probably go the distance depending on how badly he wanted to win. If he got aggressive or they decided they needed to dominate the smaller man to look impressive he'd be in trouble. Their best blows would have the ability to end him, and fast.

Saad would be tough, he was a slow starter at times but was dangerous once warmed up. Be a good effort to go the distance with him.

Johnson might be getting closer to the mark. They might have a good fight. Johnson can hammer tho and takes a fair punch. Tough one.

Qawi i'd almost take by stoppage over 15. He's aggressive and skilled and too big and strong imo.

These guys would absolutely have a chance at stopping him imo. One of his early fights he himself admitted he didn't know where he was at various times he was so hurt. May have been Monroe, i've posted about it years ago with the name. He was also put down in a street fight, albeit by a sucker punch.

In a weak 175 era he would compete well i reckon.

The same shot that Foster landed on Tiger...KO 4....would have ko'ed Hagler. Come on guys...you're mythologizng Hagler's chin . HUGE difference the middles who hit Hagler...even Hearns....and Bob Foster . Foster's power deficit came against heavyweights...not middleweights....even a 1st class middleweight chin like Hagler's.

Look at recent pics of Hagler, then look at pics of Toney. That should answer your question. I don't think it is in Hagler's genes to get as fat as James.

Toney was draining himself to make 160, and he wasn't 160 pounds when he faced heavyweights. He was naturally much bigger than Hagler. And a 160 pound Hagler wouldn't have taken heavyweight shots without going down. He was already maxed at that weight. He'd simply be too small for LHW too

Toney is naturally much bigger than Hagler. James was draining for 160 and couldn't make it after a few years. Then he couldn't make 168 anymore. Hagler had an easy time going 160 his whole career, and didn't need 24/36 hour weigh ins.

I think Hagler's chin would be fine at 175 pounds. But Hagler clearly avoided moving up.
