Could Hatton won his fight with Mayweather if the referee was not Joe cortez?

Cortez did what he was supposed to do. Why let Hatton dirty an entire fight with wrestling? Mayweather would (like he did) tie him up and wait for the ref to break it. That is what boxers do in amateurs and professional fights. Rather than allowing someone to throw ugly shots, grab, elbow, push and eventually tire you out, you just hook their arms and the ref breaks it. Many people who do not box can't understand why Cortez continued to separate them. Simple lesson: When the action is at a stand still because both fighters can't reasonably "box" due to one boxer tying up the others, that is a ground for breaking them. You only break something that is tied. Cortez did the right thing. Much like others, Ricky could not have won...even on Floyds worst day.

PBF would always beat Hatton regardless of ref or weight. He has the styles advantage and is the superior fighter.:deal

He lost it at the weigh in when he allowed PBF's endless mind games to get to him.

PBF predictably watched him for the opening rounds and then stepped it up once he'd seen what Hatton was all about. Round 6 onwards was a downward slope. PBF was just warming up while Hatton was gassing out.

I couldn't agree more he got into Hatton's head. PBF was toying with Hatton from round 5 on. He had Hatton so wound up that he didn't know if he was coming or going. Brilliant gameplan executed to perfection by PBF a true masterclass if there ever was one.

The thread is not about blaming cortez really..to summarize, this is about the non-execution of style that hatton has.

and base on a lot of comments here, it is clear that floyd is just a class way above hatton (at that point)

i still favor hatton against pacquiao a lil' at this time though

I'm really sick of people crying about Hatton not being able to foul Mayweather excessively without being called on it. It's almost as silly as the weight excuse.

Hatton would have lost to Mayweather at 140 or 147 with any other ref calling the fight.

I think PBF would have won that fight regardless, however Cortez is a terrible ref and as far as I'm concerned favoured PBF horribly.

We'll see how Hatton gets on against Pac. If he wins I would love to see a more competitive fight at 140 between Hatton and PBF with a decent ref, see if Hatton can prove everyone wrong, see how much difference Senior's training has helped him.

NO he still wouldve been knocked out ... Cortez didn't make him walk into those left hooks ... Floyd adjusted and he kept switching up his tactics ...

He went from the right hand, then clinching - to the left hook, to the jab, back to the left hook ... and mixed in some leathal body shots.

It's funny, some of the people in this thread are saying that Cortez did the right thing by not letting Hatton employ his usual tactics. But, there was no problem with Hopkins doing it against Calzaghe.........right??

Cortez didn't give anyone in that fight an advantage ... he warned Floyd of clinching and throwing elbows and threatened to take a point away ... he warned Hatton of holding and hitting behind the head several times ...

I will stick my neck out and say that Hatton under-estimated Mayweather.

His trainer kept telling him to use the jab throughout and work at mid-range, where he has traditionally been most effective, but the advice fell on deaf ears, instead trying to KO Floyd with every single punch he threw.

I am reluctant to say that Floyd would KO Ricky every time they met, but on the flipside, Hatton is one of those that believes that it is better to go down fighting (which he did) trying to secure a desperado KO rather than simply settle for a points loss.

A loss is still a loss, after all.

Floyd would beat Hatton 100/100 - he and his fanboys use the 147 thing as an excuse, but I actually believe that he is better at 147 than anybody (including himself) gives credit for. Being cynical, it wouldn't surprise me if he requested it be at 147, so if he lost he could still claim he was undefeated in his optimum weight class.

hopkins is smarter with his holding..he holds on the opposite side from the ref and hits with his off arm
