Why not use a 92 Holyfield ?! Anyway, I still lean towards Holyfield. I feel he's just a far more skilled boxer and would win on points.
Ali pulled off a massive upset in Zaire, Holyfield pulled off a massive upset against Tyson. That was my line of thinking. Could Holy do it again here, as Ali did.
I'm wondering if Lewis was really rated as high a Holy at that point. You know, after watching this I wonder if peak Tyson COULD have beat this Holy. He was on fire.
Holyfield didn't have 1/3 of Young's ability to slip shots and avoid trouble. In fact, Holyfield often made things harder for himself by intentionally standing right there and slugging it out. This is completely false. It is true that Holyfield is the more complete overall boxer though. Holyfield can't be outmuscled? He literally admitted that Foreman was like a brick wall and that he couldn't outmuscle him or make him budge an inch. And that was fat old Foreman. In his prime, Foreman held a juvenile cow on his shoulders. Those things weigh 900 lbs at just 1 year of age and it might have been even older. Foreman is also taller, so this is a strange argument to make. Yes he can take a punch, but he was not invincible and had been badly hurt or stopped multiple times. If he decides to slug it out and loses the exchange, Foreman would be on him like white on rice. You do not trade with a guy like Foreman unless you enjoy headaches and bruises. If he boxes smart he has a much better chance.
Could be. He would lack the connections to his S&C coaches and PED suppliers if you dumped him into the 1970s, though, so it's arguable how long that apex position would last.
He wasn't. I remember this well. Lewis had been KOed by McCall and in the eyes of some lost to Mercer. Tyson had huge hype after destroying Bruno like he did, whom Lewis also beat but had struggled against. Once Evander beat Tyson twice, with Bowe looking sad against Golota, he was seen as the #1. I think RING even rated him as such. Foreman was considered a special attraction at this point, nobody cares about his lineal claim. Holyfield further cemented his status with the Moorer knock out win. So at the time he had a win over every opponent he ever faced and collected 2 of the 3 major titles. Big deal.
