The odds would seem to be greatly against it. But stranger things have happened in boxing, and Kovalev's whiskers are VERY questionable.:yep
I remember watching similar footage of Bute getting starched in the amateurs years ago.. and concluding he had a Glass Jaw. Bute was protected by his hometown refereeing, the very first time he fought away from home he got his Glass Jaw brutally Shattered. It looks to me that Kovalev's Chin is more than suspect. Now we know Hopkins is a spoiler and has little real power as he doesn't sit down on his punches much anymore, so there's pretty much no chance of him scoring a KO here... that being said said.. stranger things have happened.
Exactly. I love how people say, well, this is the amateurs, and therefore it's relevant - like implying that because they are different games with different rules, somehow this means that getting KOd means nothing. Actually, if you truly get knocked out in the amateurs - and I mean knocked to the canvas and then out - it doesn't at ALL bode well for your ability to take a punch in the pros, because if you can't take a shot with HEADGEAR on, when fighters are encouraged to score often with lighter punches rather than throw hard shots, then you are gonna have greater trouble in the pros where the opposite is true!:deal
Hopkins does sit on his punches. Not all of them of course, but enough of them to keep his opponents from rushing in. If Hopkins had no power, he would have been destroyed by now. We're talking about a 50 year old man. There is no way he has the work capacity of a 25 year old. With all that said, I do see something wrong with Kovalev's confidence, and his ability to take a punch. I do think Hopkins could knock Kovalev down early and make him tentative afterwards, and then manage to cruise to a decision.
Kovalev sometimes keeps his head up when he punches too. If he wants to win this fight, he better keep his chin glued to his chest.
May keeps his chin up when he punches, also. So, Kovalev was KD's once in the amateur or many times? To my knowledge he has not been on the floor as a pro. I hate to break the news, but most guys, even the very best, get floored in their amateur and/or pro careers. Hell, Mercado had Hopkins down twice.
Kovalev was down in his last fight, as Hopkins sat in the audience. Kovalev was also down against Boone, who's knocked down Ward, and knocked out Stevenson. May has been able to get away with it when he does it because he throws few punches at a time and has enough speed to deter his opponents from punching. But as you could see in his last fight, Maidana tagged him with a great right hand. For the most part though, Mayweather won't throw in combinations, at least not when he has a live opponent in front of him.
I would not be surprised if Hopkins sparked him out in 1 fking round. Kovalev has one of the worst jaws.
Bwahaha... the mighty BHops, great though he may be, has never, ever, KOd a LHW. In fact, with the exception of the truly awful Shumenov (and he didn't hurt him) I'm struggling to think of anyone he's actually Knocked down clearly at 175. Even if it does ultimately turn out that Kovalev's susceptible to KOs (though I've not seen anything to suggest it), I would be utterly astonished if Hopkins was the guy to do it.
And even that one is questioned by many to be legit :yep But it's boxing, so anything can happen. It's very, very unlikely though.
