I'm not trying to start another thread bashing Demspey here Janitor, but don't you think that Bruno might be at least tough for Dempsey or even a lot of great fighters for that matter? Bruno was really an impressive physical specimen. He was a very big fighter, with a lot of muscle mass, and strong punching power. He had a good jab, great right hand, and showed galant efforts even in his losses. Here is a first round knockout clip over former champion Gerrie Coetzee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vluzMIpjtB0 Please watch it, if you haven't already, and tell me what you think.
No Frank Bruno basicaly lost when he steped up in competition. He was nothig special in any era. He could catch lightning in a bottle for moments but would have needed a large measure of luck to be champion in a weak era. Now he might have had a chance against Willard or Firpo on a good day but George Godfrey without the cuffs would have eaten him for breakfast.
Dempsey had been dead for 25 years and not stepped foot in a ring in 80. Yet we have about 7 threads concerning him. Not bad for a Colorado coal miner, born in 1895.
Dempsey beats Bruno in one. Jack was a natural fighter fight, Frank was taught how to fight. Jack would do anything to win, Frank had to think about every move. First round hesitation against dempsey was fatal.
Bruno would win most of the time under modern rules, Dempsey would not be able to get past his jab and would be chopped down with a right inside eight. But in the 20s Bruno would not be able to cope with the lighter gloves and more physical style of fighting. Dempsey would blow Bruno away eventually... Bruno did have heart and a fair chin, but his lack of natural talent meant he lacked the survival instincts of a fighter like Dempsey.
