Perhaps the problem is that we have come to asess him on bouts late in his career when he was declining physicaly, lacking motivation and loosing the battle with Jack Daniels.
Most people here seem to be picking Dempsey by an easy knockout or early stoppage. While this may be possible, I think that a lot of posters are greatly underestimating Frank Bruno. A lot is being made of his tendency to " freeze up ", so to speak. This only happened a few times in Bruno's 45 pro fight career, and mostly against all time great punchers. If Bruno started off strong, and got Jack in trouble early, then Dempsey would have to find something else up his sleeve other than whatever it took to beat Firpo. Bruno was a serious contender, who was in great shape in his prime, and proved himself against rated opposition. I don't want to beat the **** out of a worn out topic, but Billy Miske fighting Dempsey with only 3 recent wins in some 8 fights, does not compare to taking on Bruno, and nor does taking on fighters like Willard or Firpo. We can't accuse Bruno of having a glass jaw, just because he was pounded into submission by prime versions of Tyson, Lewis, Smith and Witherspoon. A lot of fighters would have folded if taking the brunt of a pounding like the ones that those guys gave Frank. By the way, could Dempsey have survived being clobbered against the ropes by a 1989 Tyson? Although we'll never know, I tend to have my doubts. My guess is, Bruno would be the best fighter Dempsey ever fought. He was young, fit, big, stong, skilled, durable, and yes even black for whatever its worth to anyone. I can't think of any fighter Jack ever beat who would have been more formidable except for perhaps Tunney who beat Dempsey.
I spent much of my childhood cheering Bruno on against Witherspoon, Tyson and later Lewis. Eventually I learned that it was as unproductive and unrewarding as willing England to win the world cup. Why should I set myself up for disapointment in this way. I am therfore putting my childhood experience into practice and going with Dempsey.
I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinions, but frankly I find it rather unjustified and even ridiculous that people think Dempsey would just walk all over Bruno. Just because Tyson, Lewis and Witherspoon did it, doesn't make it an automatic win for Dempsey. Personally, I have my doubts about weather or not Dempsey would beat those other guys either, given that he never beat a ranked black fighter in his career, and who's top wins consisted of a lot of men half in the grave.
With all due respect, there seems to be a lot about athletics that you do not understand. My opinion here is based on not just one, but multiple posts that you've made over months time. I have studied exercise physiology and have followed many other sports as well. Black males have been scientifically proven to have greater bone density, more testosterone, and the overall ability to develope greater muscle mass, flexibility, speed and endurance than the average caucasion. The proof is basically in the pudding. As soon as the doors opened for African American fighters to compete ( unconditionally) the Italians, Irish, Poles, Jews, Germans, and all others gradually disappeared and for good reason. This held true in most sports of western countries including football, basketball, and baseball. Today the heavyweight division is dominated mainly by caucasion fighters, but most of them are from Eastern Europe-the only part of the world that is still grooming pro fighters. The US, is no longer an avid participant in bringing up good fighters, explaining why we aren't seeing as many blacks in boxing today. Getting back to the point, there is a huge reason for doubting Dempsey's abilities when compared to other all time great champions and contenders. He clearly did fight what would later become the golden standard of athleticism, and even the men he did fight were not great athletes by later standards.
i frankly don't see why every thread even remotely linked to Dempsey has to turn discussing his legacy, it's getting quiet old andd repititive. It'd be better just to stick with the match up
mr magoo, you are entitled to your opinion but Dempsey himself was a highly athletic man and his overall speed is also evident on film despite the quality of the film
You idiot! Why come up with the gay smiles and not contribute anything useful to the discussion? You are useless to the forums.
I just laugh when someone says he read something in an area where practice is much more imporant than just talk/ propaganda/ theories, btw, wtf are you responding when I wrote something to him? Go away, this here isn´t an Ali- thread...
