I'm not a fan of clinching no matter who does it. Nevermind that it's against the rules; it makes for a boring fight which is a worse sin in my eyes. Unfortunately it seems that many of the great fighters as well as Wlad have abused the system.

I think Wlad was significantly faster than Primo and vastly more skilled. I don't buy the "Boxer X beat Carnera so he could beat Wlad" argument that sometimes floats around here. I guess that's a matter of opinion that will devolve into the usual fight about footage, though.

As for Brewster, his beating of Wlad was more a result of Wlad throwing the kitchen sink at him and gassing out badly. Brewster shipped a barrage of blows that would have had 90% of boxers stretchered out. His chin was fantastic. I don't fancy Sharkey walking through that.

    Maloney had a suspect chin.

Not until after the Sharkey KO. That was a bad KO!

    Time Magazine 1931.

Since his arrival in the US, backed by a group of prosperous but shady entrepreneurs, Carnera's career has been less glorious than fantastic. His first opponents—Big Boy Peterson, Elzear Rioux, Cowboy Owens—were known to be incompetent but their feeble opposition to Carnera suggested that they had been bribed to lose. Suspicion concerning the Monster's abilities became almost universal when another adversary, Bombo Chevalier, stated that one of his own seconds had threatened to kill him unless he lost to Carnera. Against the huge, lazy, amiable Negro George Godfrey (249 lb), he won on a foul. But only one of 33 US opponents has defeated Monster Carnera—fat, slovenly Jimmy Maloney, whom Sharkey beat five years ago. In a return fight, at Miami last March, Carnera managed to outpoint Maloney

McVey, I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make with that last post. But I know you through your posts and know you're solid. I'm just too thick to grasp it. Anyways, here is a highlight of the Sharkey-Maloney fight. Check out at 9:15 of the youtube vid. This is what I was saying. I think Sharkey could really pop when he wanted to.

I'm not really trying to prove anything, I just thought it was a little fillip that might be interesting.
Having read and enjoyed your posts I know you are far from thick! Sharkey and Maloney were bitter rivals apparently.

Sharkey sits among the old timers who we can back with least concern in matches against modern sized super heavyweights.

He proved himself able to deal with this size and style of fighter.

Even so, he needs to be taking care of business against Carnera, before I favor him over Wlad.

This shows improvement. Carnera was beating outmatched, handpicked guys the same as a lot of fighters do. He gets outpointed by Maloney, a veteran (like some say Bowe, Marciano and Tyson all did as prospects) but primo won the rematch. He improved.

Sharkey beat the hell out of Carnera first time but after another 30 fights he was good enough to beat Sharkey. He improved.

First time Sharkey did take care of business against Carnera. Second time primo had improved and maybe Jack had declined? I’ve just rewatched the first fight again. Primo looked better that time around than I remembered. By Wlad standards he looked good. The commentary says primo has “remarkable agility”

I honestly think some cruiserweight fighters could drop some modern day heavies, it's just they don't get the chance to fight

    1. Please stop using the word "super" and "Carnera" in the same sentence. Better yet, in the same post for beeing safe.

    2. A solid punch on the chin could trouble Wladimir. But its no likely to happen. Sharkey gets beaten up badly here.

If Ross Puritty could, I don't see why Sharkey couldn't.

"Could" someone KO another guy is rarely the most useful question-unless you really want to know is this more than the most remote possibility.
Beter to ask "Is there a good chance"?

And I think the answer is definitely no.
It is unlikely Sharkey could walk through the punishment to stop Wlad, even in the fights when larger fighters did this. Possible, but unlikely, even without all the clinching I also effectively consider cheating.

I gotta tell you, I just rewatched that 15th round and I swear, that looks like a boy beating up a man.
